Hi just wondering about the points for teaching experience.
Does any type of teaching count for this? I've been teaching at third level and was wondering would my hours there count.
    Thanks

Not all types of teaching count, for example, one to one grinds do not count.

The literature is not clear in the sense that it does not rule out anything else (othrre than grinds) but it does mention "classroom" experience which might implicitly suggest primary or secondary school experience.

I rang the PAC in Galway last year and they confirmed that primary school experience was accepted but that was the very specific question I posed at the time so the fact that they mentioned nothing else does not necessarily mean anything. My instinct is that third-level does not count, but maybe you could ring them on 091-549260 for more reliable information.

I have another question regarding points for the Dip.
    Can I piggy back here?
I got a first in my teaching subject, 2.1 in my non-teachable subject. 69.7% overall.
so that would give me 43%, not enough to be garunteed a place in Maynooth.
Thing is, I'll be graduation from an MA in March.
So first, can an irrelevant MA be counted for an extra 6 points.
And can an MA that will be completed in September, but not graduated til March, be counted when application is due in December.
Thanks and sorry for all the questions lately!

    Rosita,

Thanks for the help, I just called and any teaching in a classroom environment can be counted. I also found out that after this year, teaching experience will not be counted, just results.

Dory, best advice probably to ring as rossta mentioned, they are very friendly.

    Thanks

No, an MA does not count for points until you actually graduate. (A wry smile from me on that one considering the dicussion on another thread recently regarding grants!)

Maynooth was higher on points this year than it has been for the last 3/4 so chances are you'd be okay on 43 points to be honest.

And if teaching experience is to be disregarded as MBEC was told then the points will surely drop. In fact this will cause a seismic change in the system.

But as has been mentioned make the call anyway!

Hi, just wondering does this mean that if you are applying in Dec 2009, you can still count teaching experience towards your points? I hope so! I'm relying on getting some subbing hours for a few extra points

If what I gathered is correct, if you were applying to begin in Sept 2010 teaching hours would be counted, if applying for 2011 they were changing sysem and it would be on basis of results.
