An Athenry hurler has been heralded as a hero after he successfully saved a man from drowning in Galway Harbour on Saturday night. Fifteen-year old Cathal Hardimann from Tiaquin, Colemanstown witnessed the Clare-man fall into the docks at 10.30pm on Saturday night last.

Cathal rushed to the aid of the unfortunate man and managed to pull him to safety, putting his own life in danger in the process.

"I was just happy to be able to help him. I just happened to be walking by about to go sailing and saw him fall in. His leg got caught in a fender and he fell into the smallest of gaps and under the pontoon," he told the Galway Independent this week.

The incident occurred outside Sheridans on the Docks, and Cathal jumped onto the recently installed pontoons and managed to free the Ennis native, who had become lodged in the water.

"I managed to get a handful of his hair and pulled him out and onto the pontoon. I don't know how he wasn't hurt more because he was like a rag-doll when he went in. He was pretty thankful afterwards," said the Athenry minor and Under-16 hurler.

A witness who saw the incident said that only for Cathal, the man was in serious trouble. "There was no way the man would have gotten out. He definitely saved his life. His heroic actions stopped a real tragedy."

The man was not seriously injured in the accident apart from a few minor knocks and was escorted home by his girlfriend who came on the scene a short time later.

Sorry, but as someone who has done similar in the past, if I saw my picture in the paper because of it i'd be fcuking raging

Hard to know who went to the media, maybe the guy that fell in. I think anyone that does something like that deserves abit of credit, yourself included!

It'd be a good boost for a young lad like that, would do his confidence no harm either. Judging from his comments, he seems to be a fairly cool customer.

Fairy nuff, didn't think that it could have been the person who fell in that could have written in. Media attention aint my thing, each to their own I guess

They'll both need a good scrub after taking a dip in the docks, personally i'd recommend a Brillo pad and some Domestos

fair play to him but: Don't jump in unless you know what you are doing.

Two people who went to help a capsised boat on a lake in Cavan drowned yesterday.

The people on the boat made it to shore safely.
