I’ve decided I need to join a gym, my reasons are that although I’m stick thin I’m soft, out of shape and have a right pot belly!! also I’m doing it for overall health as I’m doing noting at the moment!!!

I live in rathfarnham and was thinking of Carlisle gym as I pass it on the way home from work, but when I pass by its all young fellows going in/coming out and ive heard its packed!! Jackie scally is up the road. Wondering how much tops should I pay to JS given that it will be for a year’s membership paid up front?

Also do you think that I should get some personal training or stick with the program they should give me!!

Any other help appreciated as I don’t have a clue where to start other than I need to do something!

You'll hear a lot of horror stories from people about jackie skelly's and most of them are true, however if you are paying for the year upfront you wont have any of the cancellation / bank issues that most have. They want people on DD so they make their upfront price high to discourage it so you could pay up to 700 euro! If you can wait, go at the end of the month as they're more likely to do deals then.

As for the programme - if you're a beginner, get a programme of a trainer, post it up here and save yourself PT money until you've hit a wall and need that extra bit of knowledge etc.

The gym is decent but has limitations like no free bench / squat etc but it does for most people.

*awaits onslaught from people horrified to hear of a gym with no squat rack*

    Rathfarnham Catchment Area - D4,D6,D14,D16

    Carlisle - €200-€300

    Jackie Smellies - €700-€800

    UCD Crunch - €180-€200

    Raw Portobello - €399

    David Llyod - €1000+

    Total Fitness Ticknock - ???

Best value for actual facilities & service? Carlisle/RAW imo...

Agree with second poster - you could do worse. It's at least worth going in to talk to them. I have always paid less for being willing to pay upfront. Their basic rate was reduced quite significantly this year (from €499 to €399 in Swords) so you should be able to get a reasonable deal.

Definitely get their own trainers to do you a program up (it's free) - they'll teach you how to use the machines properly if nothing else.

I joined total fitness in sandyford the other week, €450 till July 1st 2010.
Keep an eye on their website or ring them to see if its availible.
have been there after work & on a saturday & there is always free machines also has pool, sauna etc... never seems jammed.
Only slight criticism is i have to wait 2 weeks for free slot to get a begineer training programme so at the moment im just doing my own thing on the machines which is probably doing nowt for me.

It's a nice gym and never too packed, always machines available. Nice pool too and kept very clean. All shapes and sizes go there no need to be shy about being skinny.

As long as your happy to sign a year contract its no problem. Also be aware if you quit you need to give 2 months notice. They seem to get the bad rep for being difficult to cancel membership.

I have heard Carlyle is always packed too, but it is cheaper.

Thank you, glad I didn't have to say it.
