Browser connection issues

Meant to post this a week or two ago, but still might be of use to someone.

Turned on PC, discovered I couldn't browse any websites. Neither IE or Firefox worked.

Could connect fine from the laptop, using the same router wirelessly, so wasn't a broadband issue. Tried to check the router anyway, but couldn't even connect to 192.168.0.1 from the PC, although I could from the laptop.

Then discovered I could ping any site fine, but just not browse it.

After a bit of googling (can't find it now though) it turned out ZoneAlarm was the problem. As of July 15, older versions give errors along the lines of:
"Validation failed for C:\Windows\system32\VSINIT.dll. You probably are
    missing a necessary root certificate."
Basically, versions 6.5 and previous have expired and are no longer supported.

Fine, except why not give me a popup or something from ZoneAlarm telling me this, instead of blocking my browser traffic?

Also, uninstalling ZoneAlarm involves jumping through quite a few hoops.

    Temporary Solution:
Change your computer date to before July 15th 2009. I put mine back by a year.
ZoneAlarm works normally and you can browse successfully.

    Long Term Solution:
Uninstall ZoneAlarm and find a better firewall that doesn't block your browsing with no explanation.
Some info on uninstalling in this thread .

Finding any info on this is further complicated by the fact that ZoneAlarm seem to have recently rearranged their forums without bothering to set up redirects so most related links you find through google end up with 'page not found'

(Forgot to mention, was Windows XP, though I don't think that made a difference. And the laptop worked OK because I was trying out Comodo instead, which I'll be switching the PC to).
