Awkward with physiotherapist

Hey, I'm 19 & I soon have to go to a physio for the first time ever.
I don't really know what to expect, but to be honest, I'm not looking forward to it.
The idea of someone examining my body(& assuming touching) isn't a particularly pleasant one.
I guess it's not too bad, since it's only my knees, shins & ankles that need to be checked, so I'm hoping to be allowed to just pull up my trousers, or wear shorts, rather than standing in my boxers!!!!!

Anyway, has anyone had any experience with physios? Is it actually as awkward as my friends are telling me?...they're not really helping...
    I'd appreciate any info,

    Thanks.

Hey OP, I have absolutely no idea what your friends are telling you or why you would assume that it will be in anyway awkward!!!

Yes the physio is going to be touching your leg, but it is perfectly normal and the kind of thing that happens any time somebody falls over in a football match or sprains their ankle and has to be checked out in a hospital.

If for whatever reason you don't like the idea of taking your trousers off then just wear shorts!

OP, it'll be fine. If it's your knees/ankles etc that you need to have checked, just wear a pair of football shorts or something. They'll just do the examination, then will do what needs to be done - whether that's to do some massage, show you some exercises to do, or whatever.

+1 for what Monkey said, I had to get Physio on my ankle (which is different to your shins obviously!!) my physio just told me to wear loose fitting clothes or shorts, it's not awkward at all!

They just essentially rub the muscles and attempt to improve your movement. There's nothing awkward about it once you get passed the initial "i don't know this person and now they're touching me!!!" at the end of the day your physio is a trained professional with experience and they are not going to be surprised or awkward with you so you shouldn't be with them! Also, this is about your health if you friends are being stupid about it you should just tell them to shut the fup up!

I had a problem in my lower back & Glutes recently. Had to get my ass massaged as treatment. The physio was a hot twenty something.

I got kind of excited in the minutes leading to it and started to worry about getting a boner. I didnt. It was excruciatingly painful. Like having someone in stilettos dance on your ass cheek.

Anyway, dont worry about it. They do this all day everyday, there is nothing to feel wierd about.

#1 - its only your lower legs, nothing to be worried about.Even if was any part of your body, physios, like doctors, have seen every body type out there and you would just be another client.

#2 - Your friends sound like jackasses, ignore them.

Have to say this would be my biggest worry, but its only yours knees so I wouldn't worry about it.

You could waer shorts, or I know the one I went to they actually had shorts for you to change into.

Ned - I wouldn't go so far as to say friends are Jackasses, tbh its sounds like a bit of friendly banter among a group of lads. Same would happen with my mates if I said was going to phsio for first time. They're probably not aware how worried OP is.

Well if his mates were just pulling the piss or trying to wind him up then I can understand that, its what blokes do,but if they are telling him things or giving advice about something they havnt a clue about because of naivety, well,I stand by my original statement.;)

Relax OP, your friends either have never been to a physio or are just winding you up for a laugh. Going to the physio is as straightforward as anything, they will be completely professional and you've nothing to worry about. Bring a pair of shorts, or wear loose fitting trousers if you're worried. The physio I go to always has spare shorts there in case. Its lower leg, I take it its an injury you're getting treated. I'd be more worried about how much its going to hurt or cost rather than anything else!
