i'm researching this for when i come back from the states in december.

anyone have any opinions on the 3pay as you go plan using the 1gig data add on for 9.99? i'll be living in dublin working in north wicklow and meath.

i think the areas i'll be in will be mainly 3G and don't mind if i'm out of 3G a bit but i'm mainly worried about it not being compatible with the 3G S.

There'll be no compatibility problems...Just once you're aware you won't be able to use any data at all outside of 3G coverage as you'll be roaming on Vodafone's GPRS network and 3 aren't willing to pay them for data roaming.

thats not true for me. When 3G service is not available I drop down to Edge and then GPRS on 3 no problem

so there are no problems with regards to signing up for the 9.99 1gig data bundle.

i.e. getting on to planet3 to order the bundle etc.

yep, MMS works fine. Took a bit of fiddling with the right settings and then a reboot but it does work

no problem at all, just login to three, and then select the 1gb data add on, I use it myself and its great.

No offense lads, but ye sound like shillers. I work in IT admin and had a contract with 3. Wouldn't touch them with a pole. They route their data through london, shape traffic, NAT their IP's and block any sites that mention their quality of service. I'm not saying there is a better alternative but be wide. Their policies have big ???????????????'s .

Meteor could be a serious contender for 3G by December too....supposed to have countrywide coverage by then - plus I think their HSDPA network is going to be ready for 14MB/s :pac:

will meteor though provide a suitable data add on for pay as you go customers?

Yeah, I work in networks myself. But think about it, most providers have to NAT, traffic shape and route traffic to UK at some point. I think even if they peered with INEX - they still peer with the POP's in London.

I dont find them any better or worse than Vodafone, O2 etc in regards to speed, but they are way cheaper..

Yeah yeah, that'd all be fine if they actually had access to any EDGE. They have no GSM network, therefore cannot have EDGE. Vodafone have a GSM network, but it's GPRS only. Also, I've actually tested this. The only things that can be accessed over Vodafone's EDGE are MMS and a scaled down My3 portal. I think it might work in some areas but it looks more like the phone is slow to show that it has hopped networks rather than actually getting data over GPRS.
