Nissan Almera - Sort of Whining Sound at High Speed

    Hi All,

I've got a 2002 Nissan Almera Hatchback, standard 1.5L Model. A few weeks ago I noticed what I thought was a grinding sound coming from the front wheels when driving normally, this went away and a few days ago when driving on the N2 at about 80kph+ I noticed a slight whining sound coming from the front of the car.

My gut reaction is theres a bearing gone.

    So a few questions -

How do I diagnose the problem? ie is it a bearing? what side?
If it is a bearing, how unsafe does it make the car?
If it is a bearing - where would be the best value place to get it done and what would be a good price? (i'm based in Dublin North, working in Rathmines so anywhere between Santry and Rathmines really would be ideal)

    Thanks in advance guys

Had a similar problem of a whining noise coming from the front of the car at high speed. Turns out it was the missus.

    Hope this helps.

It does sound like a bearing alright. Otherwise could be your brake pads running low.

Could be a worn brake pad hitting against the lip on the brake disc. When is the last time you had the brakes looked at? Does the noise go away when you gently press the brake pedal?

To eliminate a wheel bearing jack up the car, place an axel stand under it, hold the road wheel in the 12 o clock / 6 o clock positions and try to rock the wheel. If there is noticable movement it could well be the wheel bearing.

Right so I jacked the car up and am pretty sure the front passenger bearing is gone, it makes a click click type sound when I spin the wheel.

Can someone who knows more about these things than me maybe confirm thats the symptoms of a bearing gone?

Also can anyone suggest a good mechanic to have this fixed with in the santry/drumcondra/glasnevin/north city centre/rathmines area? (basically my busroute to work!!) and how much should I expect to pay to have this done?

Thanks again to trad for the sound advice
