Okay, so I've done a stupid thing and registered for this (http://www.beaconsultra.com/). Its a 50-miler. I need to find some 15km - 25km trail runs in either Wicklow or the Mournes. Just good solid training routes for fun........

I live in Portmarnock so they are equidistant for me.

You could always look at the IMRA events page and steal some routes from there.

Glendalough is a nice place to start out, plenty of options for routes and you have the benefit of having loos and stuff there for when you finish or if you want to do a few laps.

I can send you on some map files of runs from the Garmin if you like.

That looks like a nice race though, weather conditions will likely be nasty which could make that descent between 20 and 25 k great fun!

Have you scoped out the trails in Howth?

Ahh, Howth. As you know my friend Howth gets a bit boring after a while. Besides I've ridden it abbout 150 times this year.

Your crossing the border slipping into this thread.

There's a network of trails around the head and the summit. I have a map that you can look at it, altough it's very easy to find your way. Handy for the evenings :)

Cool -- I'll do that. I'll start at Glendalough in a few weeks.

Took someone 60 minutes last year to do one mile from the top down -- must have been english.

If you've a garmin try this route I did

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/7334859

    Also Trooperstown

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/8546166

I've quite a few on the garmin web site - just search for IMRA and you'll get a few results on the runs in wicklow

Scotty, what sort of distances are you running at the moment? I hear great things about the Mournes but I've never ran there. I do run a lot in Wicklow and running along the Wicklow way is a great way to spend a few hours. There are various options to tick off a 25k ish run, if you don't mind the elevation ups and downs too.

only running 25k's now -- about to get to 20 miles and then focus on back to back days. the wicklow way is something I was thinking about as well -- seems a great option since the path is relatively okay. With a new baby I find it tough to get to far.... July 2010 is the big one so I'll be getting plenty of real training in for that one -- the beacons is just a fun run.

Will drop you a mail with some routes tomorrow.

As for taking an hour to cover a mile I feel that pain, Raam can tell you some stories about my slow progress over the tail end of races. There's times when you're just glad to be moving at any speed!

    What's next July?

Mount Blanc CCC -- 98km of Pain. Aparently only the last 50 metres is fun.

Well Scott if you're stuck for company for long runs I'm generally running long at weekends in the Wicklow hills. I survived 28k on Sunday on backroads. I'd happily do similar or slightly less offroad. You can PM me if you wish.

The Tain Trail in the Cooley mountains from Ravensdale is a good quality trail but with testing climbs. You can start at Lumpers pub either (look at Black mountain race on imra). If you get a second car you can also do a point to point finishing in Carlingford.

You should get there in under 40 mins from Portmarnock.

What, you're wussing out and not doing the full tour? ;)

Similarly to Slogger Jogger if you're looking for someone to run with give me a shout.

Hey Jeff, now that you've got a 4 point qualifying race (West Highland way race for anyone who's interested) would you consider doing the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc?!

For the CCC you just need a one point qualifying race of which the Beacons is one. The Wicklow Way Ultra at 44k and 1760 of altitude gain wouldn't even register as a 1-point qualifying race for UTMB. We need a few longer runs!
