Chorus cable (can it be used for Sky)

    Hi all,

We (my wife & I) currently have Chorus MMDS (2 Chorus aerials, multi-room) in our house. We are thinking of switching to Sky (multi-room). I was hoping we could re-use the Chorus cable from the roof. Given where one of the tv is at the moment it is not feasible to move or relocate it (the cable comes down through the attic and is part behind some tongue & groove timber on the ceiling.

Does anyone know if it is possible to reuse the Chorus cabling for the Sky installation? I checked the cable but there is no writing or indication as to what specific type it is etc.

    Thanks - laoisfan

Can't see any problem with this. Its just a standard coaxial cable as far as i'm aware. I've done the same myself and I've had no issues

There should be some writing on the side of the cable, such as RG-6/U or CT100. If you see either of these you should be good to go.

Be aware though, that each box requires an independent feed to the dish - you cannot split the cable midway between dish and box. So if you wish to place a box in a different room, or add a third box, this will require a third run of cable up to your sky dish from the room you are placing the box in. Also, if you want sky+ or sky+hd in one (or both) of the rooms, then each sky+/sky+hd box requires TWO seperate cables from the dish so you will need to add another cable to the room(s) with sky+/sky+hd boxe(s).

    thanks for all the replies.

yes, currently we have 2 runs of cable, one into kitchen, the other the sitting. if we do go with Sky then we will need a 3rd run (into sitting room) for the Sky+ box.

    no writing on the cables.

thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated.

Some MMDS/Cable downleads especially older ones are not suitable for Satellite.

    TV/MMDS/Cable = 170MHz to 860MHz at a low level.

Satellite is 950MHz to 2100MHz on the coax at a very high level, so if damp has got in then bad losses, if shielding not good, then interference in and out from GSM, DECT and 3G Mobile / Portable phones/Bases and other services.

    Run new satellite cable.

Just because something "seems" to work, does not mean you are not creating a problem or will not experience one later.
