Tax Back on Rent Paid

I found out recently that it was possible to claim back tax on rent paid. I rented a room for 12 months for college (paid by parents) at €400/month. I thought that I would be liable to claim back cash from the rent paid out but I have been told that tax claimed back from rent paid out is now given to you in the form of a tax credit (and not in the form of a lovely big cheque as previously thought!). I don't pay tax as I don't earn enough, so how is it possible for me to benefit from this?
I have tried looking for information about claiming back tax on rent but can't find anything.

Would appreciate it if anyone would be able to shed come light on this matter!

Rent relief is an income tax allowance. If you didn't pay income tax in the years when you paid the rent, then you can't claim tax back in respect of the rent.
