Had a few last night but coulda sworn there was something on the news (good 'oul RTE, was up in the parents) about a new website that can help with hearing loss from loud music.
They had some special sounds/tones that stimulated the hairs inside your ear drum back to their original position.
Anyone else see it? What's the story, or was I imagining it?
If I was imagining it, I call dibs on the idea!! :)

The Leaving Cert Physics book said damage from exposure to high sound intensity levels was irreversable... Hmm...

Well, the leaving cert physics book is at least based on peer-reviewed research.

I thought tinnitus and loss of hearing were two separate things? People with tinnitus might have haering loss but not vice versa. That site is treating them as the same thing (or at least not drawing a distinction).

I agree. The info on the site is a bit confusing. It claims to restore hearing, yet in the FAQ section, in answer to "Will this treatment improve my hearing ?" it says, " it has not been proven conclusively to improve hearing." Also, it says people expressing an interest before August 7th will receive 50% off their "first" purchase. Does this mean that you must pay for ongoing treatment ? All a bit confusing.

Depending on the price, it might be worth a try though.

    Previous thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055458615

The 'treatment' or therapy came from a BT Young Scientist project (ie students in school) and they didn't even come first :pac:

And it was in 2009, so they are still only 18 or therabouts. Yet they claim to have a 'background in physics' on the website

Without any actual medical studies you'd be mad to part with any cash, and the whole thing is very vague and wishy-washy.

    sounds like bollox to me

i have damged hearing and tinitus , and the best thing you can do for tinitus is eat very healthy , ( nuts fruit , water ) avoid coffee as much as possible , avoid alcohol particulary GIN and definitely avoid grass, class a drugs .
and always wear ear plugs , even in pubs / crowds , gigs .

get your blood pressure checked as well , high pressure can give you tinitus.

for hearing damage , you cannot get it back , you need plugs to protect them and also lots of silence helps to trick the brain into giving you somewhat better hearing .

Surely not... making vague claims of therapeutic benefit despite the absense of clinical trials is a long held tradition of alternative medicine practitioners. I'm sure you can probably already get acupuncture or chiropractic to heal your hearing damage. :pac:

But it's always cheaper to just take some delicious placebos.

As a sidenote, i did some research into tinnitus, which is noticeably bad for me in the last year.

What I found was that other mammals have the ability to regrow damaged hair follicles, a trait not found in humans.
However, gene therapy is looking into ways of discovering how other mammals do it and then figuring out how to get humans to do the same.

They discovered the gene, I'm not looking for it now but it has something to do with or sounds similar to "maths" (or something....)

Anyway, any tests and what have you will take years and experts said don't expect to see any definite results for at least 50 years.

    Which kinda sucks.

Ever night I fall asleep to.....

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....

    what bliss.

I remain confident that stem cell research will yield a solution within 2 decades. By the time the Chinese are building their lunar missile bases, we'll be growing new ear canals.

What are good plugs to get and where can I get them??

Note "Leaving Cert Physics" not "Leaving Cert Biology".

I'd be skeptical as to whether this would be more but it's probably worth a try. What it probably does is make your brain focus in more on what you do have rather than physically repairing your ear.

    Yeah, same.

do a search for er-20 plugs

they are cheap , but they give you an idea of what its like to wear custom plugs

if you want custom plugs - go to frank cass at sundrive road / kimmage cross roads cost about 250 euro .

loud drummers should get the 25 db filters , i use a 25 on the left and a 15 on the right
