Idle IM/HIM questions.

    I'm very much out of my depth asking these questions, It's not for me you see... im asking on behalf of one of my friends. Honnest! ;)

    How long is it likely to take average-joe to get fit enough to *finish* an IM assuming he were thinking of hitting a HIM event early next season (for a summary of his current fitness, you can assume he learned to swim this year and is starting to hit 2k sessions in the pool, has done a couple of marathons, is doing a couple of short triathlons this summer, and is lazy as it gets when it comes to cycling)? What's the typical amount of training you'd need to be doing as an initial base to work towards an IM off?

    Are there any IM-distance events suitable for 'beginners' that you've a good (=guaranteed) chance of getting a place in if you simply register early enough? It seems like IM Austria is the defacto race I keep hearing about, but not exactly easy to get into the lineup for. I've also heard that the conditions at home/in the UK are inappropriate for people that aren't *quite* hardened against the elements yet, so I've been put off the idea of targeting IMUK/eireman races for a first event.

    My experience is limited to training for and competing in 3 IM's

    Keeping it simple, it boils down to 3 swims, 3 bikes and 3 runs a week, the bulk of the hours being spent on the bike

    Ideally a 2 year build would be good. Its not so much about completing the race but about preparing your body and mind for the training required as you build towards those long training days.
    A 2 year plan also gives you plenty of time to plan and get your entry in

    Another consideration is what part of the world would you like to visit. You can build a holiday around your chosen race for yourself, family or friends

    Have a read at this book. (BeIronFit bu Don Fink). Very easy to read and contain 30-week training plans. I am sure you'll find something of interest in it.
