Ok - so cycling up Patricks Hill - real eye of the tiger stuff...

Chain creaks and then snaps - first check I still have 2 liathroidi - so only my pride hurt (comical fall onto the path)

Should I just replace the link (even with my Frank Spencer like diy skills I'd give it a go) or given the fact the chain is 2 years old :o should I just dump it. I seem to remember hearing the the cassette effectively bends with the chain - so will I need a new casette?

Two years? Unless you cycle very rarely then yes, bin it. Maybe do the measuring thing first to check how stretched out it is but I'd be surprised if it hasn't knackered your cassette by now.
