Seems a good price for a full HD 40" . (last years model)

Nice find! Not last years model at all by the way, the 530 series is definitely a 2009 model

I imagine you can. Just go into a store armed with that page, and surely they wouldn't let you out empty handed! It is the same company after-all, even if you do buy instore:)

All DID Electrical stores had this model on offer today for €549 while stocks last, I think there were 10 per store. All gone in Kilkenny DID this morning. I was told it doesnt have Mpeg4.

The poster in this thread in terrestrial forum was getting the test card so it is DTT compatible. It is the 32B530 the poster has but surely the 40B530 would also have a DTT tuner

Anyway, it says "Irish Digital TV Ready" on the image on the power city website link.

Thanks OP! Drove up to Dublin and bought this today. Really nice TV. We have NTL here in the house but I just went through the set-up procedure anyway and the TV picked up 9 digital channels. I didn't even know digital channels were available already! So I have RTE1, 2, TV3, TG4, Radio 1, 2FM, Lyric FM and RnaG. The quality of the TV channels is fantastic, clearer than what we're getting through NTL.

    I don't understand.

Can anyone tell me any possible drawbakcs to it only being 50MHZ? or was it 50KHZ?

Anyway, I get paid by the month unfortunately otherwise I would snap this up. Been lookin to upgrade from my 20'' Samsung TV to something thats Full HD and bigger to really appreciate Blu-Ray.

I'm in Longford, picking up from Cairn Hill. Well NTL changed the connection to the wall so I couldn't plug the aerial cable into the wall. Instead I just connected it to the TV and wrapped the other end around a window handle to try and get some reception. Fairly primitive I know, but I'm on top of a hill and have a clear line of vision between here and Cairn Hill. I picked the air source.

Well the NTL picture seems to be more grainy and when there is a bit of action the NTL picture goes quite pixelated (I'm not sure if thats the right word, but I think you know what I mean), whereas the picture I'm picking up through the aerial remains smooth. I'm just watching the Limerick and Meath match here and the difference is fairly noticeable. This is possibly just due to my NTL.

Far as I know NTL use a lot of compression due to them having very limited bandwidth for their signals, this is what likely causes the pixellation...

Could anyone advise if the Samsung has an option to play external speakers on its sound menu ?
I am trying to connect up a sound system at the moment and not having much success :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I personally thought the speakers had to be hooked up to the source, i.e.: NTL box, Sky box, Games Console or DVD player.

    50Hz, actually :)

Basically it means the screen refreshes faster so the picture is smoother and you get less blurring when there's a lot going on onscreen. Can make a big difference in sports events and action movies for example.

I have a Samsung series 6 and a mate has a series 5 and there isn't a huge difference that I can see (although I don't see his TV much compared to my own, obviously).

Bought one of these from Joyces in Wexford Town on Satuday last - same price 549. Great set - picked up 76 Irish and UK digital channels (incl radio) from my roof aerial (which was set up to get analogue from Wales yonks ago) despite some dodgy weather. Not sure if the offer is still on in Joyces though.

Anyone know of anywhere in Dublin that this can be got at this price?
Can't bring myself to pay €640 when it was €550 at the weekend...
Alernatively are there any other killer deals available on comparable tellys?
Had a look at DID + Powercity online and there's not much to excite.
Looking for a Full HD 37" or 40".

Trust me wait until this weekend. These weren't one-off deals. DID and Power City are under pressure to sell, just like Harvey Normans. I bought my budget telly in Power City on Bank Holiday Monday and the only things moving among the aisles were salespeople and tumbleweed. There'll be deals aplenty for the next coming weekends.

Sales guy in currys attempted the "we'll bet them" and the "tv's are actually going up" lines on me yesterday. Sales men can't seem to sell after the tiger, they were simply suppliers in the past !! ridiculous..

Soundstore are advertising a 40" Samsung for €579 which looks like this model. You should be able to haggle with them down to €550.

TV's are going up. Panel manufacturers are increasing the price of panels... this lovely savings will eventually/is being passed on to consumers.

    Link

The T.V. in question is an old model and probably left over stock or else discounted stock from the manufacturer.

This is what I hated when I was in sales, customers thinking you know nothing because you're sales guy only interested in making money.

Sony and Samsung use the same panels and make their own panels in a joint venture. If panel prices in general are rising, it shouldn't affect sony and samsung set's

The Tv in question is not an old model btw. Its a 2009 model and has only been around a couple of months

Worth a ring probably. This is the cheapest 2009 range 40" Samsung model. If the one in Soundstore is only HD Ready, its a 2008 model. Doubt it would be though!

Sweet thanks for that , I'll call into them this weekend - I think they are having a sale. Although I was in there about a month ago and the prices were quite high.

Just picked one of these up in Harvey Normans.
They have some sort of -16% off everything sale, for 16 hours tomorrow.
They were already selling at the lower prices, this evening.
    Anyway, €699 - 16% = €588
Tried to haggle a bit but didn't get any lower than that.
Not as good as last week's Power City price but better than DID (€639) or Currys (€800!)

Was it the 40" Samsung , what model are they doing ?

I asked the guy who was 'advertising' here (sound something?) but he didn't reply; in these deals is there any offer for wall hanging them or are they only standalone??

    Thanks, Barry

I got the 40LB530P (the one that started off this thread, I think).
But I think that the -16% sale is off everything in the shop.
Not bad, although their prices didn't look all that low to start with.

Cheers Toysrus worth a look allrite.

Heard the ad just there on the radio for Soundstore , its a 42" Samsung Plasma for €579.

I would prefer an LCD over the Plasma though.

Just rang soundstore there and the TV advertised is the Samsung PS42B430. However you can get the same model from Powercity.ie for 570.

    http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-13-42B430&pages=1&prod=42B430&brands=SAMSUNG

Just a heads up though, that model has only one SCART port as far as I know so you might run into a few problems if feeding lots of components (NTL box, DVD player etc) into the TV.

Pity I missed the original powercity deal but if you keep an eye on their website they do tend to put certain models on offer every now and then

Just back from Harvey Normans in Cork , they have none of the Samsung 530 left. Getting them back in 2 weeks. The salesman did mention there was only one scart which is a pain in the ass, he recommended the 550 series which had 3 scarts but the price was €713 on sale

I wasn't suggesting the TV was bad! Just stating it has 2 Scarts as opposed to 3 or 1. I'd avoid the 530 due to just 1 Scart.

Picture wise, they're quite good, DivX an added bonus as mentioned (didn't realise it'd play MKV).

This is a big plus , makes me think I should wait for a deal on the B550. Is this a standard feature on the 550 ?

the "movie" option on the media player doesn't show by default
you need to add it, but it's piece of cake
read more about it and how to do that here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-televisions/984624-samsung-b550-how-enable-mkv-divx-xvid-playback.html
