Looking for work experience

    Hey,

I'm job hunting in Dublin at the moment, but accounting is a career change for me and I have the chicken and egg problem of every employer wanting experience before they'd hire me (added to the tough jobs market at the moment, I'm not to hopeful of a job in the short term anyway).

I've done some ACCA exams and got good results, I have bookkeeping and payroll experience and I'm not afraid of hard work.

If there is a practice owner or partner on these boards that would be interested in taking me on for 6 months work experience, I'd appreciate it greatly!) you can send me a private message and I'll send you a C.V.

    Thanks!

I too am looking for some work experience and would be willing to do a few days a week for nothing just to build up some experience. I'm a graduate from NCI with a 2.1 BAhons degree, studdied accountancy and am now paying for my own exams (ACA) in order to get a move on with my career while there is a serious lack of trainee positions floating around at the moment.

If there is anyone with advice or opportunities pm me and i can send copies of my CV out for further viewing.

I would go to goldenpages.ie and look up all accountancy firms. Check the website of those who have them. If they don't specify whether or not they are currently taking on trainees, ring them as well as all of the firms without a website to see if they are accepting CVs at the moment. If so, send yours on over and give them a ring back in about 2 days time to see what's up.

I did this last year as many small practices don't have website and really don't advertise. It's a start.

I have a feeling there's a jobs section for trainee positions on the ICAI website too... might check that out?

Im starting into the new ICAI elevation programme in October. I am currently working in engineering and hoping to apply for a trainee accountant job next summer 2010 after my Cap 1 exams.
Anyone think I am mad starting into ACA where there seems to be no jobs in at the moment?
(BTW, i am 27 so I am really starting from scratch all over again!).

(Sorry about nudging in on this thread but was hoping you might share your opinion)

    Thanks!

I'm 27 and started from scratch as I have a BA in Literature and Creative Writing and a background in desktop publishing. I also have military experience troubleshooting and fixing missile systems. So, I'm all over the place.

I'm just finishing up my CAP1s and my first year of training. There are jobs out there, but you have to look as many don't advertise. While trainee jobs aren't as easy to find as they were, they are there, and there are still many qualified jobs out there. Your background could help you find a job in industry.

I don't believe it's crazy if it's something you really want to do.

I am currently employed in a big4 financial services audit but its really not for me, Im looking for a small/medium accountancy firm with much more variety to take me on, and I would like to gain some exposure to tax work if possible!

Anybody aware of any small/medium companies currently taking CV's?

P.S. I am currently taking ACA exams and am based in Dublin but I am not averse to moving out of Dublin

i was looking for training position for ages 8-10mths. I sent out cv's everywhere and ring around too but nothing. So in the end i got a friend to ring a friend who has a small practise and asked would he take me on p/t for free.
So now i have a 2day week, and getting paid some money but at least im getting a chance to get all my exams done as im studying 3 days a week also and i'll be qualified in 12-18mths. Win win for everybody. And im getting work experience. I already had 18mths in practise and 2.5yrs in industry so he was eager for me as he doesnt have to menitor me. I think as soon as you get your foot in the door your sorted.
Best of luck to everybody:) and keep trying
