Listerine is brill, the antiseptic one - as opposed to the antibacterial one. Or Difflam mouth wash.

You can get an anaesthetic/antiseptic liquid called Anbesol, its very effective, easy to put on too since its not a gel, its what I'm using on my giant of an ulcer right now and it works great, it comes in a small bottle and you just dab the liquid on with your finger, you should be able to get it at any good pharmacy.

    try corsodyl gel.

by the way, warm water and salt can be very effective. its soothing.

Orabase can be good too. All I can say about antiseptic vs. antibacterial mouthwash is ? They are the same thing. Agree with difflam.
Corsodyl and difflam is my treatment of choice. If these are recurring ulcers, you need to be examined by a dentist. Or if the ulcer persists more than a few days. This is very important.

OP, Bonjela have a new product but its really expensive. However it works like a charm. I cant remember the name of it but the chemist will know it.

Basically its a cotton bud sticks with fluid in it. What you do is snap one of the stick on let the liquid seep onto the ulcer through the cotton bud. The liquid contains an anasethetic and some sulpher based stuff. So it numbs the ulcer to the point where you cant feel it for a few days. The sulpher stuff proceeds to gently burn the ulcer away.

Works like a charm if done correctly but as I say its expensive. I think i paid €15 and you only get 2 cotton bud sticks.

Whatever products you use, these mouth ulcers usually will resolve themselves within a couple of weeks.

Believe me, i remember the soaring pain of having one of these...the pain is unbearable.

I'm not winding you up here and i know i'm stating the blindingly obvious here...but you must brush your teeth at least twice a day, and using any mouthwash before or after brushing would be advisable, to prevent these ulcers from occuring.

Same here, some people fail to realise that mouth ulcers are commonly a reflection of other problems in your body, rather than having a dirty mouth :) For me Zinc and Vitamin C tablets keep the baddies away, brushing is not the solution (although obviously it never hurts to keep them clean!)

Well Antibacterial only kills Bacteria. Antiseptic can kill other germs too.

You learn something new every day. However, all Listerine products are antiseptic.

my dentist told me never to use listerine...it's too aggressive or something, she said.

  • Moderators Posts: 1,589 ✭✭✭Big_G

It's because of the alcohol content. Alcohol doesn't actually have much effect in controlling oral bacteria. But it does possibly contribute to oral cancer and definitely alters the permeability of the oral mucosa. So in short, no advantage, much possible disadvantage.

I stand corrected again. That doesn't often happen :p
However on your original point, why antiseptic and not antibacterial mouthwash? Secondary infection of ulceration of the mouth is almost always caused by bacteria, not fungi or viruses. Why would you need the additional antiseptic spectrum? (Why for that matter does listerine need an additional antiseptic spectrum when most problems from oral microflora are caused by bacteria, not fungi or viruses?)

That's all too technical for me :D all I know is I get mouth ulcers when I'm run down or have a cold (viral??) and my doc told me to use the antiseptic one rather than the antibac one and difflam when it's bad.

    That's a bit scary isn't it?

You all do know that ingredients in toothpaste can cause these mouth ulcers or canker sores?

    http://www.therabreath.com/art_cankersores.asp

Check the ingredients on your toothpaste, i believe the Sensodyne ones dont have it !

I have tried almost everything for mouth ulcers, and found that TCP is the best thing.. use a cotton bud to dab it onto them. It tastes yuck & you might smell a bit like a hospital for a while, but the clear up really fast

BTW, can getting mouth ulcers run in families? cos my dad, and two of my sisters get them regularly.

Without reading the link, I think that you are talking about sodium lauryl sulphate, which is a foaming agent found in soaps and toothpastes. This is true, but only for certain people. The vast majority of people have no problem with SLS.

Just to clarify, Listerine does not cause oral cancer. What I am saying is that alcohol may have a role to play in the development of oral cancer. And listerine contains alcohol.

The explanation for this is a bit technical, but I alluded to it above. The mucosa (soft pink lining of the mouth) can change its permeability (its ability to let certain things through it and not others) when exposed to alcohol. This means that carcinogens from things like tobacco can pass through more easily.

So, it is known that this occurs. Some speculate that alcohol may have a more direct role to play in the formation of cancer. But there is little evidence of sufficient quality to back this up at this point in time.

Mouth Ulcers are caused by a Vitamin B deficiency aka when you are run down.

You are going slightly off subject harping on about oral cancer.

The OP wants some help to deal with mouth ulcers. I was suggesting in my previous post that normal toothpaste with SLS irritates the ulcers when you have them as well.

Am also prone to ulcers and got paste from doctor called - 'Adcortyl in Orabase' - comes in a yellow tube. It's horrible pasty stuff and sticks to your mouth but brill for ulcers..............:D

I have received holes in the roof of my mouth twice this year, it was not good but they healed up, without any meds, you need to look at your diet, this is normally the problem.

This is why I love boards. People who think they know what they are talking about when they really don't. I was responding to a post by tbh. I didn't want to worry anyone about Listerine and its use, so cleared up the original comment.

Mouth ulcers can be: idiopathic (no known cause), due to vitamin deficiency (ferritin, folate), related to vesiculobullous diseases (blistering) and traumatic.

So there are many more causes than just vit B (folate) deficiency.

And I was contradicting you with what I said about SLS. You said that certain toothpastes can cause mouth ulcers. Just not entirely a true statement.
