Do you care what a guitar looks like on you?

Bit of a strange one. I play mainly covers and the last two years or so I have been using a Strat exclusively for reliability purposes having previously never been a strat cat.

Have always been a Les Paul man, but just find that tuning can be touch and go in hot rooms and that the neck can be that wee bit too thick for legato runs and such. I think essentially I am just finding the Strat much easier to play, but here is the thing, I cant help but feel like the guitar just doesnt suit me! It does not seem to look right the way a Les Paul did and therefore I am never entirely comfortable playing it.

I know that I am both a little girl and also far too old to be letting such a thing be an issue but just wondering if anyone else just feels certain guitars look "right" around their shoulders????

The only time I think guitars look bad is when you see kids with gigantic xplorers and other really huge "metal" guitars that are way too big for them and just look ridiculous.

A strat is as much (if not more) of an epitome of rock as a les paul. Most of the greats played strats. I have both so I must look good at least half the time right? ;)

I feel the same! I love the "look" of LPs. I own an epi LP, the neck and the fret coverage are the only drawbacks i have. I recently bought an american strat with a humbucker and two single coils (emgs), the tone is amazing and its so easy to play. But i dont think it looks as good as the LP. However, because the strat makes me sound better, il always use it over the LP. However, i wouldnt rule out buying a proper LP down the road :D
hmm a joe perry bone yard or a zack wild bulls eye would be nice, who wants to but them for me?

I dont care personally, for me its all about the feel and the tone and will it break my back lugging it around!

I used to care a bit how the guitar looked on me height wise but lately I've found that because i practice so much sitting down I find it easier to play higher up on my body. Anyone else find this?

    Ha ha

Yes I am exactly the same. As guitarists get older their straps get higher. I am a much better player when the guitar is up high but damn it looks naff!!!!

I have a Tele and a Jazzmaster - I think they're the coolest looking guitars ever made, I can only hope they look as good around my shoulder.

I like 'em low, and I like to throw them around a bit. I think that's cool.

It's called being comfortable and not wrecking your wrists.

I set the height of my bass to be the same sitting down as when I'm standing.... it just makes sense.

Yeah me too, unfortunately i spend most of my time sitting down while playing, so when standing i've got my guitars relatively high. What doesn't make sense is having a guitar/bass down by your ankles with a sore wrist after about 2 minutes of playing!

I know what you mean. My friend is an amazing bassist but he literally has it on his chest when he plays. Looks a bit ridiculous.... Fair play to him though. He cares about how well he can play, not how he looks.

And I think my Strat looks way cooler on me than a LP does. And its much lighter and easier to play. If you want the LP look without the chunky neck and the backbreaking weight, you could try the ESP Les Paul copies. They feel great to play.

I used to wear my bass quite low, always walked out of practice with sore wrists and pains up my arms... Not worth it no matter how cool it makes ya look! Now I've got it just above my waist, I can play easier and more comfortably :)

As for the look of the bass, once the neck feels just right I can live with anything!

I've never really thought about it. My main concerns when choosing a guitar are features and playability. I like wearing my strap up high but that, for me, is just a matter of practicality.

I dunno about that. I find it much harder on my right wrist to have the bass high up.

checkout musicman guitars.they have some of the most comfortable guitars to play and their bodies and shapes are alot tidier and smaller than the like of LP,s and most strats.

    There erganomically friendly!

So you can't play sitting down then?

Not as comfortably as when I'm standing.

I've never really thought about how a guitar looks on me. I'm not one of those people who practices their chops in front of a mirror or something :). Don't get me wrong, I care about how a guitar looks, just not really in combination with myself because all I'm generally going to see is a pair of arms. Before I even get that far though I've got to like how a guitar plays.

As for strap position, I keep my guitars around hip level but I keep my basses a bit higher. I spend most of my time playing while standing. I prefer the freedom to be able to move around more. If I am sitting down I am probably trying to tab something out at the same time so I am going to be playing a bit slower.

Bizarrely enough it is probably a good way to wean yourself off looking at your hands while you play.

    I like how a 335 looks on me....Hides the belly well :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,563 ✭✭✭stateofflux

oh, yea.....the look very important....but in saying that i bought a jaguar for the shape originally but ended up playing it live because the neck is easy to play an i have good tone options after modding it with humbuckers......les pauls are beefier but too heavy on my back and strats cant stay in tune as well as a jag......image is nothing if you cant play properly...

the lower the cooler imo (unless you are tom morello)

    very low.......very cool......

That's one thing my Junior does not do... :(

I don't mind as long as it looks comfortable on me. That is, that I'm not fighting random bits that are sticking out or that it's not right up at my chin.

A friend of mine went out with a seamtress for a while. She said there are two typical physiques for men in making clothes (can't remember the names). Basically one has longer arms in proportion to the torso, the other has shorter. When we measured up we found that my mate's arms were longer than mine even though I was quite a bit taller. I presume this is why some people find it easier to wear their guitar really low, while others don't. Looking at Ben Shepherd in the video made me think of it.
