I finished up college in may and have since been working. Currently im on emergency tax as i havent been able to get a P45 off my former employer, which im not overly bothered about as a lump sum at the end of summer would be nice. Im thinking of going to do a masters in sept.

    Few questions:

How would i go about claiming back my tax come september and how long should it take roughly?
Am i still classed as a student until i officially graduate or is it until the new college term starts?

    thanks for any help guys!

The tax system does not differentiate between a student and a non student. Each individual is entitled to tax credits regardless of being a student or not.

Normally you would be required to fill out a Form 12 at the end of the year/start of next year (available on http://www.revenue.ie) .
This is a record of your income for the full year 01/01/2009 to 31/12/2009. It is a 16 page form but if you only worked in PAYE employment you will only be required to fill out 3 or 4 pages max, so dont worry about the amount in it. You will normally get your tax back with 6 weeks (sometimes alot less/sometimes more).

Once you finish up before going back to uni , you can fill out a form P50 (send your P45 off with this). This will help you get your tax back if you havent presented a form P45 to revenue while you are still working.

Open to correction on the above but think fairly accurate.

    Hope it helps
