How is rent allowance paid?

Hi guys, I was under the impression that rent allowance was paid into the landlord's bank account. However, today I received a cheque from the department for 792 euro. I had registered as needing rent allowance a week before. There was no letter with it, just the cheque. Presumably this means I just pay the landlord after cashing the cheque plus the balance or am I missing something?
It said the payment period was from the start of June to the end of July. I originally registered with them at the start of June. Is it usually paid monthly at the end of the month?
    Many thanks

Well my rent allowance is actually paid weekly to my post office so i can collect that along with my jobseekers every Friday, quite handy really....I guess it just depends on what area youre in and who your CWO is. You must be getting it by cheque every month.

rent allowance varies by location and situation (ie, single person living alone, single person sharing, married couple with no children etc.)

You might be able to help me here Xiney. Where exactly do I go for rent allowance in Galway? I signed onto the dole and my interview isn't until August. I went to the CWO and was approved for emergency allowence until my interview (maybe you could shed some more light on this as well as I'm not 100% sore what it is) They also gave me a form for Rent Supplement. I'm wondering do I apply for it off them? Or do I apply at the same place I applied for the dole and the CWO help me out until I'm approved?

SOrry for the stupid questions but I'm a bit lost:rolleyes:...

You apply for rent supplement through the CWO. The emergency allowance is the same amount of money just until your real claim gets approved.

when i applied, i had to make sure i was on the housing list or at least be approved as having a housing need...you gotta go to city hall and lodge an application with them..only when they approve it will they sign your rent form (orange in colour i think)then you have to get it signed by those in the tax office and then by the gaurds to say everythin on the the form is correct and your landlord has to fill it out too so there's a good bit of running around for it....
its collected at the post office, I'm not sure but I think you've 3 days to collect it there as well...can anyone confirm this?

oh also you have to return the completed orange form to your CWO...i made a mistake of sending it to the rent allowence section in longford where they "lost" it and I had to go through all the hoops again from scratch after a good telling off by my trusty CWO!!!

Also....if your living in galway you'd need to make sure your rent is a certain amount. There's a ceiling for every county. i think its broughtdown to €66/week..not too sure but if you are paying more you wont get rent allowence... it used to be €70/week when i was applying but i know they brought it down coz of rents being lowered... best to ask your CWO...if you are paying more the CWO will just recomend that you ask the landlord to lower the rent in light of rents being reduced etc. They reduced rent allowence to €42 a week so I think you contribute €24 from your dole...

do you have to be on the dole for rent allowance? I am probably doing a Masters soon, with no back to education or dole, will i be able to get a rent allowance?

Rent allowence is means tested, so not too sure if you HAVE to be on the dole but I'd bet that you either have to be on jobseekers benefit or allowence. I don't know anyone in receipt of it that's on minimum wage or anything...maybe if you down to 3 day week like a lot of people are you might still qualify..
I know that if you have over 5K in savings they deduct something like €10 off per $1000 after that.

AFAIK, the only students eligible for rent allowance are those coming off the dole or who are on BTEA.

    Open to correction.

More information on rent supplement is here

You do not qualify if you are a full time student, unless its BTEA
