Is it worth just packing up and going?

    howdee,

I've been keen to eventually move to France, and some of my mates are saying "just pack and arrive and look for a job". I have a job in Ireland, and think it would be foolish to just arrive in France, and hope to get the same job within a few months.
I don't want to work in a bar or teach English. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I would like to continue similar work what I'm doing now, not be skipping from job to job..

I've applied from here for a few and got some replies, positive and negative..

However, just packing and going to another country is a hug risk for me at this stage. Is it worth the risk, or should I wait and do it right. I'm thinking "wait, and do it right.. lol..." but sometimes, you do have to take the risk.... right..??

I would wait, but as John Lennon said, life is what happens when you are busy making other plans

I really think you should wait until you have something sure. France is great, but (like anywhere I suppose) it is hard to do anything basic like renting a place without a job or source of income. You say you have been receiving positive responses? Interviews or what? Things here aren't as bad as Ireland in terms of the recession so depending on what type of job you're looking for you should have no huge trouble getting one.

I know you think if you wait you'll never go, but if you go now with nothing organised, you'll be in a foreign country, no job, difficult to get accomadation, and quite isolated. At least with a job, it will be easier to make friends, and you'll have money to socialise as well.

Anyway I wish you the best of luck! It's a lovely country and I love it here.

I deffo think you should keep trying and go when you find a job! :) Sounds like fun!

There is also a big difference between being stupid and take "fun risks". There is recession and there are not a great deal of jobs out there. To me it sounds plain stupid to quit your job, let go of your house and move somewhere with no job, no money or a place to stay. Only to find after a couple of months that you can't get a job, you are out of money and has to go home.. where you now dont have a job anymore, you're broke and maybe dont have a house.

I have just moved to England to my bf after gotten redudant in my own country. I was lucky to get a summer job that lasts until end of October, but its far from what I want to do and the pay is far worse then what I had at home. But tbh I take any job I can get, cause there are not many out there. So finding a job you actually want in France, I think might be tough.

As I said, I defentitely think you should go, but find a job first, or have a very good plan what you are gonna do if you cant find one. Make sure you have your old job waiting for you back home or something. Being unemployed is far from fun.

Good luck and have lots of fun in France! :)

Cheers for the replies and advice.

I have been unemployed before, and it's no joke...

Mate was saying "If you're not in the county you can't get a job, shur can't you temp or work in a bar, if it doesn't work out you can come home" and so on.. All good in theory...

No joke coming back to Ireland with no job. I suppose I'm prepared to do good research and preparation over the next year or more if needed, take some short trips to Nantes/La Rochelle/Bordeaux, take advantage of Ryanair..!!

I'd like to do it right, as in I want to go to a specific part of France. Maybe if I went to Paris, I'd have a better chance, but I don't want to live in Paris, I'd prefer to be near the west, as I love the ocean, the Atlantic. So it will involve some recky trips possibly.

For example I once spent 2 yrs in Rome, but I wouldn't live there, if you know what I mean..

At the same time, I'm thinking if I don't go I'll still be here in 5 years time, putting off potential relationships and what not, if I go I have no choice but to look for work.

But my gut tells me to wait it out and have a job to go to....

Im sure they see your Irish address and are questioning it .
Do you know anyone in france that you could use their address for your CV. Also I would get a french sim card for maybe a spare phone so they can call you .
    all this will help .

I don't agree with this. I had an Irish address looking for a job and my responses were only positive.

I do have a friend in La Rochelle, but if I state in a cover letter that I'm prepared to go to France, I don't think it should matter. I once had a company ring me from Italy for an interview, so it can work both ways...

I moved to Germany with 80 pounds in my pocket. stayed in a hostel and after 3 days I got a job . and worked there for 9 years . So it does work when you take a risk .

I moved to Italy at the time without a job, and got one within a month, but I didnt care what I did. It's a different story now for me.

There was no recession when I went to Italy either.

    I see your point though...

I'm sorry but this is rubbish. We're part of Europe, there's nothing the French government can do to stop a company 'importing employees' from Ireland.

My thought on this would be the only people that can go abroad without a job are people who have some sort of safety net. i.e if they get really stuck they can ask their parents to bring them home. If you don't have that and risk being homeless and stranded if you can't find work then don't do it. I feel your pain anyway! I'm in the same boat, would love to move but I took out a 7k loan to help out my parents and I'm stuck here because of it and they rely on me for support so...no fun!

I suppose I was thinking of changing the car, which would involve a small car loan, and its dawned on me. If you get this load, put off going anywhere for a few years...

I was thinking of taking my time anyways, so maybe it could be ok.. lol...
