depends on the hours u work and what you're entitled to.

I get an hour for lunch and 2 * 15 minute breaks, all self managed though :D

My work hours are kinda messed up(chef) but I usually get 30mins and then a 15min tea break later on. I mostly keep working during my tea break though because I dont smoke and could'nt be bothered sitting down doing nothing on my own for the 15mins! Thats if I'm working evenings though. If I do days I get 15mins, then 30. I'm only in work for a total of 8hrs a day though.

usually stated in a document that the company has set up, and this should have been given to you when you started. here its 15 mins morning, 45 for lunch. some people take the p*** but no-one has done anything about it though.

We just get lunch (an hour) and even that is frowned upon. Never get morning or afternoon breaks!! Is this right?

Me neither. No morning or afternoon breaks.

I mainly do the 9 to 6 shift, with an hour for lunch roughly round the middle, but I sometimes work 11-8 and since "lunch" isn't at a set time, I may have an hour from 1 'til 2, 2 'til 3 or perhaps 3 'til 4, and then have to work straight through to 8pm without a break.

Not a major issue if I get the 3 to 4 lunchbreak, but quite a pain if I get the early lunchbreak.

    Is this allowed?

If you work 4.5 hrs you get a paid 10 min break, the 1 hour lunch is not paid so thats seperate. Usual rule is that you don't work more than 4 hrs with out a break.

    See this:

    http://www.employmentrights.ie/en/informationforemployees/workinghours/

or print this off and bring to work......

    http://www.employmentrights.ie/en/media/Workingtimeact.pdf

Unless your in work on your own there should be no additional cost to your employer to forfill these obligations.

I'd like to see my bosses face if I insisted on my 10 min break after 4.5 hours!

Something like this I would imagine -

In all fairness though we work in an office so its not like it's super regimented - you can get tea whenever you want and such.

Junior doctor here. I get 20 mins or so for lunch most days, but not always. Never get a tea or coffee break. Be grateful! :D

i normally get 45 mins some times 90 mins depending on hours worked

My normal shift is currently 9.5-10.5 hours, for which I get an hour unpaid lunch and a seperate half an hour break. Breaks are for shifts over 4.5 hours, lunch for 6.5 hours+ lunch and break (20 mins) for 8.5 hours plus. Extremely stressful retail job though where you're run off your feet all day..

I work in healthcare. Never get a coffee break and usually only get to take about 20 minutes of my unpaid lunch hour!

Never really give it much consideration though until I read threads like this:).

15 minutes in the morning 15 in the afternoon and 30 for lunch. I always take these breaks even if I'm up to my neck in work because I find that I work much better once I get back to my desk.

I think most offices assume that you'll make yourself a cup of tea from time to time, and therefore don't need to set a 10 minute break in stone.

I think the idea behind the fixed breaks was for customer facing staff etc, who can't just wander off at a moment's notice - they need to make sure there's always someone on the floor, or answering phones or whatnot, so breaktimes need to be more regimented to ensure that

    a) everyone gets one
    b) everyone doesn't disappear at the same time

I work in a pub and my work breaks amount to whatever time I can afford to sit at the back of the kitchen shoveling food into my mouth before a waitress comes in to tell me that someone is waiting at the bar. I'd be lucky to get 3 mins to myself in one night.

i have flexi-time in work, so lunch is anything from 30 mins - 2 hours.

20 mins in the morning and 2o in the afternoon
