Making Friends

    Hi everybody.

To get to the point, Ill be starting college in September and am a little nervous about making friends and being in a new social situation.

I purposefully chose a college where I would know pretty much nobody in my course (as well as it being exactly what I want to do-obv.)

So does anyone have any tips for me as regards making some mates on the first day?

    Many thanks!

Smile and be friendly to everybody you meet. Ask questions but not so many that people will think you are nosey.

Do not latch on to the first person you speak to, if you like the person and they are in your class you will meet them again anyway so no need to latch on to them straight away. Such behaviour will make them avoid you.

Don't be the loud person. The loud person will be noticed quickly and will probably be popular at the start but by Christmas everyone will find them annoying.

I think sunnyside's advice pretty much wraps it up. It's worth remembering too, that while it's natural to be nervous, the reality is every single other person who'll be in your year is going to be in the exact same boat as you - walking into a class of complete strangers.

Lol, I was the same as you with the picking college's I knew no one in :)

I'm in my 3rd college now (don't ask) and I think it depends on what college you are going to. I've been in classes ending up as small as about 8 people by the end of the year, and mid-size classes of about 50 people. I'm not the most social person but always felt it was really easy to get on with people in any college I've been in, as many people with have the same intrests as you.

I'd also agree with what sunnyside said ;)

Go to the orientation in the first week and if its like the Uni I went to you will be put in groups in your respective courses to take tours. 2 of my best friends were in my orientation group.

Its quite normal to use the opening line all the way through your first year 'Hi, what cousre are you doing' or 'Hi where are you from'. Cheesy I know and it wouldnt be acceptable in many other situations in the real world but Uni isnt the real world (TG).

Maybe try moving in with other people in same situation-in 1st year and not coming in a group. try not to libe with a group of 3 or more who know each other, they wont feel the need to make the effort.

Finally, just be patient. You will probably make many friends/random people but it will take a whgile to form proper bonds like you would be used to from Secondary School. Months even, but once you do they will last!

    Good luck ;)
