Not on it's own, but it helps.

Research on weight loss has shown that eating foods with a higher water content and a lot of stews/soups help people achieve the most dramatic weightloss as the higher weight of the food without any calories behind it depresses the muscles in your stomach causing your brain to register the stomach as being more full of actual food than it is, so your next bout of hunger is delayed longer.

Im going to preface this by saying consult your doctor if you are going to change your diet in any dramatic way but speaking personally substituted rice for potatoes and took out bread and pounds just dropped off like that.

I am pretty sure that drinking a lot of water can make you feel full. At the very least it will mean burning more calories as you need to keep on going to the toilet to get rid of it.

yes but not good to be drinking too much water. eight units I think they say is the limit. End of day dont do anything drastic. too much of anything a bad thing as they say.

I presume you mean 8 glasses when you say units bvc?

Just drinking loads of water won't do anything for weight loss. But drinking plenty of water with a good diet is essential for healthy organs.

if your drinking water regularly through the day you'll be increasing your metabolism. I think the colder the water the more calories you burn as your body has to work to get the water down to a normal temperature before it can be taken in

so it will help in weight loss.

As far as I remember drinking a litre of ice cold water a day will burn an extra 150 calories due to the energy requirements of bringing it up to body temp once ingested.

theres no way 1L = 150 cal thru thermogenisis - more like 15Kcal prob....

Depending on how tightly you're measuring your calories, this effect is usually minimal.
In order to heat 1 litre of water by 1 degree celsius, you burn 1kcal of energy.

So if you drink 1 litre of water at zero degrees, and it leaves your body at 38 degrees, you'll have burned 38 calories. In reality, most people drink water at between 5 and 10 degrees, so in order to make any significant impact on your calorie count, you'd want to be drinking 5l+ of water per day. Even then, the impact is roughly 1lb of fat "burnt" over 35 days. I would call that insignificant, though others may not.

I can't recall what I read I'm trying to find it suggested with over all increased metabolism and the cooling of the water etc it was around 80 cals per 1lt drank so if one drinks 2ltr's a day at 160cals it's 4800 cals a month which would closer to 2lbs a month

that's over 1.5stone a year that is certainly not to be sniffed at :D

I'm certainly not saying drinking water and you'll be back in your size 6 in no time, but it does "affect" weight loss however insignificant.

Water is essential to keep your body ticking over. Without it, you're kidneys cannot perform as well (I assume this has something to do with osmosis) and leaves some of the work up to your liver. This puts your liver busier filtering blood and not converting fat to energy. This is why it's always important to keep hydrated while exercising. So, if you keep hydrated, your body will be working more efficiently, therefore your metabolism will stay up, therefore you will burn more calories. This is when your resting or exercising. The more the better, but aslong as you're keep thirst away, you're grand.

Happily enough, I have a source for this information. Great article too, well worth the read.

A lot of people confuse thirst with hunger. So drinking a glass when you think you might want to eat a snack, for example, can help.

Also I tend to overeat at meals (especially dinners out) so I try to drink 2 or 3 glasses of water before I start eating to make me feel a little more full.

I don't know about weight loss but it certainly makes you feel better.

I've been drinking at least 2L of water a day for about the last 6 months and feel much better. More energy, especially mid afternoon.

Before that I drank hardly any water by itself, only milk with meals and coffee.

I've been drinking a lot of water recently. About 4-5 pint glasses a day. It definitely keeps the hunger down as I don't eat as much as I used to. Plus I've dropped half a stone in the last month.

Yes interesting discussion. Drink water by all means but also get in your half an hour of exercise as well, brisk walk, cycle, jog etc.. The two go hand in hand.

I was not a water drinker. It was coke coke coke coke coke for about ten years.

Even when I started in the gym I was afraid to drink loads because I thought I would put up weight on the scales at my weigh in because of it. How wrong was I!?

I wouldn't be without it. I get in at least a litre a day but it is usually two litres. I find I'm actually lighter because of it and I believe it's playing a part in my weight loss. (I notice a difference in weeks I don't drink a lot of it)

Not only that but a huge difference is in my skin which really was horrific. I put it down to everything under the sun except diet/water. It really has never been clearer than it is no (touch wood! ;)

Water just lets your body run more smoothly!
