Sound Effects

Hi I'm a complete noob to the whole music production and i have lurked around this forum a lot and have found it very useful.

My set up is very basic consisting of a fast track pro, shure sm58, reaper as the DAW and numerous vsts (mostly free ones) inc. ezdrummer which is triggered by an electric kit and amplitude for guitars and bass.

I am close to finishing my first track and am surprised by the almost decent quality we have achieved by using this set up (thanks to the help of what i have read on this forum).

I am looking for advice on finishing the song and am wondering is there an online resource or is there a specific program for what i call "sound effects" in songs. The genre is "rock/pop" and what i mean by sound effects is for example what you'd hear briefly at 0:04 and 0:10 of shipping up to boston by dropkick murphys or what you hear from 0:16 to 0:20 in knights of cydonia by muse. They just seem to really build up to the big riff bits!

Is this achieved by reversing an audio sample from the song and changing the speed or is it done by midi or is it done by downloading samples? Any help/advice would be really appreciated.

Also I am looking for any free vsts that anyone might know of for improving the vocal sound. So far the vocals were recorded with the sm58 through the fast track pro (and a vocal booth made out of duvets!) and i have used a free compressor and a delay vst by kjaerhus audio and the sonnox eq and sonnox limiter vsts. Again any recommendations would be great, Thanks

Samples are probably the way to go although you could recreate a lot of cool stuff using synths. But you'll need to know your synth instruments well and spend a lot of time if you're looking for a particular sound.

Check out http://www.freesound.org/ for samples. You might find something there. Google is great for samples too you just need to know what sound you're looking for.

EDIT: I just listened to the dropkick's song you mentioned. That sound is easy enough to do within your DAW. I achieved a similar sound by recording the first chord struck by the guitar on it's own and letting it ring out. Reversed it. I think I added a tiny chorus & flange effect before I reversed it (can't remember but it sounded cool). Then that was it. I had it low in the mix and it brought the chorus back in nicely after an acapella section.

Before or as a build up to a chorus of one of your songs get a nice dreamy synth sound (that works in key with the song) and automate the pitch wheel (via your daw).

Draw a midi note in tune with the pre chorus, just draw a long note and cut it off just before the chorus kicks in.

Build up the anticipation of the song by giving the effect of the synth climbing (pitching) higher and faster.

Synth whooshs etc... your looking for trasistions between sections.

You will prob find it easier to use a synth that a sample as timing and keys can be off and when you start to mess with them you will find they are 16bit so start to fall apart :(

Automate, filters etc.. on a midi track with a soft synth, I would say that hypersonic is a great one for what your looking for ;)
