it's always been a good sign in my experience

but times have changed so the only thing you can take it from is it's not a _bad_ sign

It's normally a good sign. Most companies will be either be strongly considering you or about to make an offer for a position before they check references. I have heard of situations where a small section of employers employ all the subtlety of a sledge hammer and will check long before they're willing to make an offer, potentially causing issues for candidates in their current workplace.

    It's generally a good sign.
