    Hi all

I am unsubscribing from Sky + and am interested in purchasing the Humax FOXSAT HDR 320GB PVR Freesat Receiver. I would grateful if someone could answer a few questions....

    1. Will the above box just plug and play with my exsisting dual lnb connections

    2. Will the same box (Humax FOXSAT HDR 320GB PVR Freesat Receiver) purchased from the uk work fine here in the south. I have a few relatives visiting soon who could bring one with them.

    3. If the answer is no to '2'does anyone know any retailers selling these boxes in the Waterford/cork area. Not freesat.ie... They only take paypal and bankersdraft and I don't want to deal in these.

    Thanks

You will not be disappointed. The Humax pvr is a great machine. You will need to enter a uk post code at setup stage. I recommend you use a london postcode so that you get ITV London in ch103. You will then have access to itv hd on 103. Alternatively you can enter a Northern Ireland post code and access utv on 103 and itvhd on ch997 on itv london. Enjoy.. If you dont have a post code just google for one.

I have had my Humax PVR for about 6 months - it's a great piece of kit. It's so convenient to be able to recored ITV, BBC3, five etc, without having to listen to the guff about TV3/ITV hassles and the rest of it (and the joy of NO monthly sub).

HD is superb - Wimbledon looks especially good in HD.

Only downside is I still think some the main channels have a 'soft' picture, and despite changing the settings, they just aren'tas 'crisp' as other channels, especially ITV1 London.

    Anyway - enjoy.

ITV West Country region is transmitted at proper 704x576 resolution, and with a higher bit-rate. All the other ITV channels are 544x576. So i suggest you change your post code to: DT4 7BP. You will see a dramatic difference on a large screen tv. 42inch or more.. i expect ITV West Country to reduce bit rate later this year after switchover in this region. Itv currently using satellite feed to feed transmitters in this area.

Thanks for that tip...do you know what ITV plans are in relation to providing better picture quality? Also what about Channel 4 and Five signals are they OK?

I'm originally from the North so I'm used to BBC NI so I may go with that. Can you reset/scan for London etc if you take the notion later after the first install?

Also for those of you using the Humax have you ever transferred recorded broadcast to a usb drive, if so is it easy and what format are the broadcasts saved in?

Finally, I believe you can scan for freeview channels like Sky News and use them like 'other channels' in the Sky+ set up, which I am presuming means you cant record these channels???

Thanks for all the feed back everyone!

Even if you use as London postcode you can still set BBC1 and BBC2 NI as your default BBC stations so they'll be at 101 and 102 on the box. You will, however, have ITV London at 103.

    1. You can reset the postcode as often as you like. As said in previous post you can use london or west country post code and still have BBC1 and 2 NI.
2.Never transferred to usb. But it can be done and i believe vlc player will play without converting. So too will the new windows media player in Windows 7.
    3. You can tune in the other free to air satellite channels, including sky news, travel channel, Flaunt, NME TV etc. You CAN also record them in non freesat mode. If you wish you can also tune in UTV in freesat mode or ITV West Country.

CH4 and Five picture are fine. No idea about ITV's plans. Hopefully they might set up a fulltime hd channel similar to ch4hd.

Thanks again for all the responses. I am looking forward to its arrival hopefully I wont be disappointed, I was a big sky+ fan...but the thought of paying €15 extra a month for Sky HD was the straw that broke the camels back

Saw Freesat at firsthand today believe it or not in Curry's (Sprucefield, Lisburn). I have had Freesatfromsky for over 3 years and I must say while I was impressed with Freesat I see no reason to change from one to the other. Five's associates are still not available and red button facility is still not up to speed with FSFS. While Sky News and other non-freesat channels can be added this can be a bit of a nuisance i believe when switching from freesat mode to non-freesat mode. However I do see the attraction in ROI where FSFS is officially not available and if I was living there I would probably go down the Freesat route. I also have not gone down the PVR route here in NI (either for satellite or Freeview) as I do not want the clutter of extra boxes and I want to continue to be able to record RTE analogue.

Compared with the free choices we have here in the ROI the UK is spoiled for choice. We cant even get our own channels (RTE...) FTA. You can on Sky but that requires a subscription. Hopefully RTE might offer some option in the next year but to be honest I wont miss it.

As I said earlier I was very happy with SKY+, it is a great system. But Sky is overpriced and the HD premium is a joke. Maybe if enough people walked they would think about their pricing structures. To be honest I think that the Humax box has a lot to live up to to match the preformance of my Sky + box. But then again I dont have to pay €50 approx per month (more if I had gone with HD) for the previlage anymore. I hope it will balance out in the end.

I'll be happy living with UK channels and the Irish Radio

I will let you guys know how I get on

Just to chip on the debate about postcode/channels. I am using a regional southern england postcode. I did however change BBC1 (101) to be BBC London. I did this because BBC1 London, BBC2 England, BBC3, BBC4 and Five were all transmitting from the same transponder. This means that if you have 2 recordings on the go - you often have a greater selection (or better quality) of channels you can still view.

I have the Humax Freesat HDR for about a week now absolutely love it, can believe i can record without having to worry about changing channel, really impressed with the HD picture on BBC HD and the odd ITV HD programme, would really recommend it..its worth the extra cash compared to the non pVR version. Bougth mine from Satbuyer ordered on the Sunday delivered on Wednesday, 311 euro delivered

    Hi all

got my box this morning. Set up was a breeze. I just want to ask a few questions of you users.

How do I add other free to air channels. I tried mannual tune and found Sky news but when I saved that was the only channel I had... All my others were gone. How do I add them as extra channels?

Secondly, does the machine record on standby like the sky plus box?

Finally, where or how do I access ITV HD?

    Thanks

Run that one by me again, Willis . . .

What's the bit about having to watch something on the same transponder as you are recording from ? I thought with two different feeds and two different tuners/receivers you wouldn't be stuck with this. Sky+ doesn't have this restriction, does it ?

With sky+ if you are recording 2 channels you cannot watch a third channel. With The Freesat humax pvr, you can record 2 channels and watch a third, as long as the third channel is on same transponder as one of the recording one's.

    1. In order to watch sky news etc, you need to go to non freesat mode in menu. The freesat channels are available in freesat mode available in menu option.
    2. Yes machine records from standby. It wakes itself up about 15 mins before recording and shuts down afterwards.
    3. ITVHD is available by red button when watching ITV (not UTV or STV). Only available when ITV are showing HD programming, Eg the Bill. Schelule of ITV HD programmes for next few days:

    Wednesday 29th July 2009 (7.30pm) Grimefighters (documentary)
Thursday 30th July 2009 (9.00pm) The Bill (drama)
Friday 31st July 2009 (10.35pm) The Bill (drama)
Saturday 1st August 2009 (3.10pm) Field of Dreams (film)
    Wednesday 5th August 2009 (7.30pm) Grimefighters (documentary)
Thursday 6th August 2009 (9.00pm) The Bill (drama)
Friday 7th August 2009 (10.35pm) The Bill (drama)
Friday 7th August 2009 (11.35pm) Ned Kelly (film)

    Enjoy.

Thanks again all. Great tips all round. I've my other channels set up and the tip about recording 2 channels while watching a third I'll save for my Sky + friends.

I have a few HD programmes set to record.

The only Fta radio channel I can't find is Newstalk .... Anyone know the settings for this.

That was my point - depending on which BBC region you record (or ITV of that matter) - makes a difference as to which channels you may be able to view as the 3rd feed - BBC London is on the same trans as BBC2-4 & Five - some BBC regions share with some obscure channels or other BBC regions.

I got Humax last week to replace Sky+, everything seems good but:
    1. When I switch from freesat to non-freesat and back, the schedule of planned recordings have been deleted.
    2. Cannot record from buffer. If I've paused a show and then decide I want to record it and watch it later, I can't. Humax will only record from live transmission and with one touch recording it wants to clear the buffer before starting recording.

    Anybody know another way?

Thanks for the clarification. I think the chances of me recording 2 channels and wanting to watch a 3rd are pretty slim so I don't think this is going to impact me. I thought we were talking about recording one and watching one.

Interesting questions. Hadn't noticed the schedule thing but that would be a pain. Interesting about not being able to record from the buffer after pausing. Would it be possible to press record first and then pause? Or is that not possible either?

I really like the box as a non-subscription service and if I were moving from a normal SKY box I would have been amazed. However, moving from SKY+ is stiff competition and makes the comparisons very tough.

Humax are due to release an extensive firmware upgrade over the air in the autumn. The recording from buffer issue is supposed to be resolved in the upgrade. In the meantime Sean72's workaround works a treat.

ITV HD reservations disappear if a freesat channel scan (manual or auto) happens. Adding/moving/deleting non-freesat channels deletes all freesat recording reservations. We are hoping this will also be resolved with firmware upgrade.Other than that they should not disappear

looks like a nice piece of kit, rather than starting a new thread have an question that ye all may know the answer to.
Is there a PVR freesat receiver out there that has a "magic eye" function whereby you can playback recordings in other rooms and control the unit via remote control??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 310 ✭✭TaxiManMartin

I got the Foxsat PVR. Its a very complicated interface. My parents would have no chance whatsoever of using it.

I like that its free, but the interface is cack altogether.
Very bad effort from the developers.

The remote is also the worst effort at a controller in the history of remotes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭pH

Have to agree that the UI is pants, and the remote isn't great.

Haven't figured out is there an equivalent to 'now and next' to easily scan through what's on other channels?

Also I liked on Sky+ that if you just pressed play it would resume playing the last thing you were watching ... can't find anything equivalent on the Humax.

However the skip function makes up for everything! Sky refused to implement it and the FF was crap, Humax FF is smooth and fast and skip is the icing on the cake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭Martin_F

I'd have to disagree about the UI & the remote. The UI is OK - certainly its easy to record compared to a VCR or standalone DVD or HDD recorder. I'd have no qualms showing my parents or inlaws how to use it. And the remote isn't too bad - it works well for me as a universal remote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

The remote control layout is not good I grant you (SKY excelled themselves on that one!) but the user interface on-screen is fine.
You can see what's on now, next and anytime in the 7 days on any channel by pressing the "i" button first, then navigating with the arrows (up/down to change channel or left/right to move forward and backward in the schedule). The series link is bulletproof - wife has never missed an episode of Neighbours, Home & Away or Corrie since it went in last January. You can download recorded programmes to external hard disk via USB.
Deleting old programmes is a bit sluggish and you can't delete stuff while the box is recording (firmware limitation) but Humax are working on an update at the moment. For freeing you from the shackles of Murdoch etc. it can't be beat:D

the only thing I don't like about the remote is that there's no button to bring you directly to the 'list view' for the EPG. the interface is far, far better made than that of the last DVB-S box I had. a great piece of machine really this Humax thing

Well I'm just over a week into my new Humax box and so far my experience has been very good. I still cant get over the fact that I am getting these channels for free after paying out for sky longer than I can remember.

I had one little hiccup when the channel info wasnt showing up and therefore I couldnt record from the epg. However the system seemed to recognise that something was wrong and prompted me to do a channel rescan and that immediately sovled the problem. BBC HD is fantastic and its great to be able to record it via the EPG. This sort of thing happens with SKY plus also.

I was able to transfer a recorded episode from the Humax box to a usb drive and watch it on my laptop via the VLC player. That is a real added bonus for me. I still havent braved reformatting an external drive to linux to permit larger file sizes. Need to read up more on that one.

One final question I have is where do I find the codes/instructions for the Humax remote that will allow me to programme my phillips tv?

Obviously, the reduction in channels from SKY wont be for everyone but if you dont mind that and you want a free subsription service then I can highly recommend the switch.

As an aside - to date the only gripe I've had is that the unit failed to record series link programs while I was on vacation for 2 weeks (seemed to stop after a few days). On return an EPG update was prmopted and then all my series link continued. I hope they sort out glitches like that in the next update.

    Hi,
Just got the Humax Foxsat PVR and I love it, but I have a few questions.

1). In Freesat mode there are still a few rogue channels that are FTA but not Freesat such as NME, I was able to scan them in and I've sorted out my top channels that were missing and now I can get them by switching over to STB mode. Can I add my rogue FTA channels to my Freesat List? If not, is there an easier way?

2). I've noticed at least one good channel that isn't in either the Freesat or FTA list, it's Sky News, where has it gone, is there a way to scan it in, do I need to change my postal code?

3). With my old Lidl's STB I also had the scrambled Irish channels that I used for the EPG and Teletext. Is there anyway of adding these scrambled channels?

    4) I haven't been able to find ITV HD, I tried to push the Red button when on ITV1, but noting happened, perhaps there was no HD content at the moment, is there anyway of adding it as a permanent channel?

My apologies if some of these have been asked already, but I tried to search for answers on the above. Thanks for any advice or tips!

Other than these few questions it's great so far..

Other than these few questions it's great so far..

1: No, you cant do this
2: The scan should have picked this up - try rescanning or you should be able to add it in manually
3: Select the channel type before scanning
4: I recall something about post codes and HD platforms - You must be on an appropriate region and this will only work when a HD program is showing

ITV HD is only available to a British postcade, not a NI one. That is, it is ITV1 not UTV. If you enter a London postcode, when an ITV1 programme starts, a red button appears offering HD if it is available in HD. 'The Bill' is such a programme.

Freesat is in oposition to Sky, so Sky news is not included in Freesat listings, and you cannot add non Freesat channels to Freesat. There is no 'other channels' section.

Ch4 HD is not available on Freesat.

It is possible to scan other channels and add them in. Swiching from Freesat to non-F.reesat mode is a little clunky though.

It is a lot more than clunky. The EPG is gone, and the list of chennels is enormous to sift through. Basically, I have considered it not worth the hassle. Only Sky news is lost, and I can live without it.

In fact life is better without it.

    Thanks for all the replies!!

I think I have all my answers, at least for now.

1). Unfortunately switching back and forth is clunky, it's OK for me, but I can't see other members of the House doing it, but other than Sky News and NME, we aren't missing much.

2). I did a re-scan of the FTA's and Sky News is now there.

3). I now also have the Irish scrambled channels in FTA for teletext, I just had to change the Scrambled type from FTA to ALL and do a re-scan.

    4) I had a London Postcode entered, but there wasn't any HD content at the time, I thought there was a way of adding it as a permanent channel like BBC HD, but it's only accessible via the red button.

Thanks again for all the help. The HD is amazing!

I read here earlier there was supposed to be an update for the Humax box coming out in Autumn. Anyone know what the status of this is? I have software ver 7.5.2 at the moment.

Foxst PVR has been given a rough time in some of these posts. Personally, I think its excellent.

Some of its current failings are bugs and oversights (hopefully the coming software upgrade will address these) but others have been imposed. For example the awkward navigation to non freeesat channels is also a feature of other freesat boxes and the "other channels" feature on Sky. Because of this Freesat (or Sky) know that people will spend less time watching the non epg channels and this is aimed at encouraging tv stations to sign up to the epg.

Unlike some other freesat boxes the Foxsat allows you to sort the non freesat channels into some logical order and the scanning for non freesat channels is streets ahead of the cheaper freesat boxes.

Flicking through channels is also much smoother and faster than with other freesat boxes.

Is the foxsat too complicated for some older people as one poster suggested ? Well that depends on the altenatives. Is it that much more complicated that sky+ ? Its certainly way easier than dealing with a VCR.
