I've just got back into playing my PSP and was wondering if its possible to set up a US account and download games? I have a Irish account already, but there seems to be way more on the US PSN Store

If you have a PS3 you can easily set up a US account on that. I guess you could then download the content on that account and synch it with your psp.

However, I believe the problem is with the actual payment for such downloads.
