Why do some people not introduce themselves when they ring you?

I know a few people who will ring me and launch in to a conversation without introducing themselves. I don't have caller ID on my landline so I never know who is is for a few seconds until I register their voice.

I think this is such bizare behaviour. Why don't they simply say "Hi, this is' X" and then launch in to what they want to say......

/What do you do when you ring someone?

Get a phone with caller I.D. save you writing silly posts, and maybe they dont realise you still have your P&T standard issue.

People are used to having their identity known in advance is all.

Happens me at work. I usually shame them for the laugh.

"Hi Das Kitty, can you tell me where we are on the XYZ thing....."
"Sorry who's speaking?" (even if I know well)
    "It's FirstName."
    "From??."
    "From the Lab."
"Oh hello, I don't have caller ID on my desk phone, there are only a few that do actually."

Then I let them ask their stupid question, as it's almost always a stupid question.

Das Kitty how are you finding work in the Alphabetti Spaghetti company?

They would assume you have caller ID.

    I don't have a landline and I wouldn't have one either!

Do you just answer the phone to randomers not knowing who they are?

    Thats mad carry on!!!

The only people that ring me are too important for introductions.

Now, if you'll excuse me, Pat Kenny is on hold.

Because some people are ignorant fúcks to full of thier own self importance and have no phone manners or consideration when ringing people who's files they have infront of them.

i heard there was a recession going on back then too so probably not all that different, of course without the wannabe D4 hipsters who think the iPod Video is *sooooooo* 2007 and must throw it into the landfill in order to make room for the latest iteration of disposable consumer gadgets to make its way over from Guangdong province.

and in '87, stupid people could not yet get onto the interweb. neither did ads, javascript didn't exist yet twas basically a peaceful community of nerds and college heads from around the world, mostly America.

it wouldn't be all that hard to shove an ol LED display and caller ID into that thing :) maybe even a mechanical counter to show the number

caller ID is almost worthless since they brought in #31# or 141. it does nothing for your privacy either, de gubmint still knows who you called and when.

nothing wrong with those oldschool phones, if you want you can get a caller ID thing for a euro at a car boot sale, or 12.99 in the shops.

Well if everyone introduced themselves as 'X', it would be really confusing trying to guess what X it would be... expecially if, like me you dont know anyone called 'X'.

people that ring from their mobile to your mobile and introduce themselves even though you know them for ages and they dont block their number are really annoying. Pre emptive saying their name for them doesnt even discourage them for introducing themselves again the next time they call.

oh yea, what about the ones who delete your number after a couple of days or months and you send them a text only to be greeted with the infamous "whos dis"? those ****ers really piss me off

It always funny when your hear someone making a call and launching straight into a conversation, then they have to stop and say mid sentence "it X", then start again. Always brings them down a peg in their estimations of their own self importance.

Ha! I tend to just go 'Howaya' when I get through to somebody I know, particularly if they are my posh frosty-faced auld aunts. In fact, a good old 'Howaya' works wonders on my mother's facial expression when I answer the kitchen phone in front of her. That's all when I'm being polite.

More likely if I know them better is 'Huh, what do you want?' (I'm ringing). The average phonecall is a sublime weapon for a surprise attack on any bollocks around you that the humour takes you to put in on.

Then you have those complete muppets who ring their brothers/sisters/mother/father and introduce themselves. Just how slow do they take their brothers/sisters/mother/father to be?!?!

There is absolutely no point in picking up that phone unless you have a few choice insults rearing to erupt down that line. At the very least you can give them an almighty bollocking for not remembering you (based on your highly informative 'Huh' or 'Howaya').

You should get a second phone installed so you don't have to run upstairs to answer it :pac:

You must be blessed with a a group of relatives who all have distinctive voices / accents then. If I ring my sister then any one of 4 female voices (her or my 3 nieces) can answer and they all sound exactly the same. They invariably answer with just 'Hello', so I have to ask who I'm speaking to.
