hey a mate of mine has an acer aspire 5050 series, anyhow it wouldnt boot up, and we checked the harddrive in my laptop, also in a pc, it wouldnt work either, it had vista home premium on it.

he bought a new hard drive and doesn't have vista the disc never came with the laptop, it's 2 years old.

I have a new xp disc never used, and we tryed to install it, but that wont' run, have set it to boot from cd, it still wont.

it gives the options to 1.insert windows installation cd, but when thats in it wont work
    or 2. choose language settings
    or 3. repair your comp.

if you click the 1st option it says choose an operation system to start, and only vista comes up

surely though a new harddrive that shouldn't even be coming up on it...

    has anyone any ideas?

    sorry if this is confusing

    thanks

Surely booting from the cd should bring up the xp install? What happens when you boot from cd?

it says those 3 options as above and and says choose an operating system to start, microsoft vista only appears, when you click this it restarts and goes back to the same menu

If it's a brand new HDD you've after putting in the laptop, it certainly shouldn't have Vista on the Boot menu. And similarly, if you are using an XP CD, it shouldn't have anything to do with Vista.

So I can't imagine why you are seeing the option to boot into Vista.

Throw Ubuntu onto it as a temporary measure. Then see about getting an Acer OEM Vista disc. You have a legit OEM licence (make note of your product key from the sticker on the bottom) so that should work.

When you power up the laptop there should be a Acer branded bios screen with options to modify boot settings? It's usually accessed by pressing one of the function keys, F12 is a good bet. This should bring up a menu with various devices to boot from, the cd drive should be one of them.
It sounds like the laptop is just loading a bootloader from vista, i've had this happen before even when an old hard drive was removed.
