Ive been told my car needs a new clutch, 1200euro!
Does this seem a litttle excessive?
    Its a 1.9tdi passat '05.

the symptoms are - the odd time when shifting up, the clutch, when pressed makes a noise, its hard to describe almost like a light mechanical 'whoosh'
and its sometimes a little difficult to put it into 1st and 2nd gears
The mechanic told me straight away that i need a new clutch, and to be honest i do have a tendency to ride the clutch.
    Thanks.

To answer this again, your car has a dual-mass flywheel. When the clutch goes this part of the car has to be replaced also. That means that the clutch kit alone is around 600 euro (I think). It's a big job so the labour costs are high. I had mine done with oem parts for 1200. I can't remember the name but it was some independent place out near Dun Laoghaire that has a good name for vw and audi. That was the cheapest I could find at the time. If you get spurious parts or a reconditioned clutch kit you will get cheaper.

Then again that is if your clutch is actually gone. My symptoms were different, the clutch kept slipping.

    Thanks for that.
Is there any way to know exactly what the problem is without taking the engine apart?
Would the costs up the north be lower?
