New doping products?

There's an interview with the head of the French anti-doping agency here

    http://www.lemonde.fr/sports/article/2009/07/27/une-nouvelle-generation-d-epo-suspectee_1223033_3242.html#xtor=RSS-3208001

In it, he says that they suspect that two new prodcuts were used during the Tour. One of them (third generation EPO aka hematide?) is so new that it isn't commercially available yet and won't be until 2011. Both of them appear on WADA's banned list though and they think they will have a test for the two new substances in September - October. Could be a very interesting time.

    Translation from Le Monde

Unlike the 2008 Tour, the 2009 edition ended without revealing the slightest positive. Should we conclude that if this 96thGrande Boucle was run with water?

This is not what is believedPierre BordryThe President of the French Agency for the fight against doping (AFLD):"There are likely had blood transfusions", He told the World. The president of the AFLD has also"the belief that two new products have been used during the Tour, two drugs that are not yet on the market". Reportedly, one of the two substances would hematide, a third generation of EPO to maintain hemoglobin levels.

Still in clinical phase, the drug, whose introduction is scheduled for 2011, is already on the list of substances banned from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The second would be the drug AICAR, a product that acts on muscle tissue and helps burn fat."I was seized by the scarcity of certain riders"Note Pierre Bordry. Testing for these two products could be ready by September-October. Needless to say, that like CERA EPO last year, positive cases could be reported several weeks after the Tour.

Especially as the AFLD is also preparing to test new samples taken during the Tour in 2008 over a fifteen riders from competing in the Grande Boucle and some performances have been well below those of last year. Finally, the AFLD has been discovered in the garbage of some teams."We found heavy drugs, as a substance to produce insulin which is normally used by diabetics", Said Pierre Bordry.

    :(

So who will be on this list of riders who haven't performed at all this year and are now going to be retrospectively tested? Sastre and Evans?

With these new tests hopefully all nine riders in this years Astana team will be serving bans for doping

Well, we've done everything else, isn't it about time there was boards 'medical program'? There are a couple of doctors in our midst, should be safe enough.

Wouldn't it be ironic, Lance getting the Yellow if Contador and Schleck were found to be doping. I reckon Kimmage would crack up completely :D

Has Bruyneel ever had a positive rider, while the rider was still on his team?

Not to my knowledge. He runs too slick an operation to be caught. Even with these new tests I'd bet my life that none of the 8 riders on Astana (I'm leaving out Dmitriy Muravyev at RobFowl's suggestion :)) will ever get caught.

Of course there's always la's retrospective 1999 test. Although you can't count that as the moon, sun and mars weren't correctly alligned at the time of the test!

Want a scary fact? According to a Belgium government study, 80% of EPO use is for non-therapeutic uses! (ie as a PED). I can't get my hands on the $ value of the EPO market but it's huge

So Bruyneel is the cleanest Directeur Sportif and Lance is the cleanest rider. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah reminds me of Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races.

On a side note as bad/funny as the drug problem in cycling is it still hasn't a patch on Baseball. Apparently according to a mate who lives in New Jersey and a baseball nut the amount of players registered as dyslexic has increased 9000% in the last two years. The reason being a prescription drug used to threat dyslexia that has a high steroid usage is on the cleared list with the baseball council!!!!

Now there's a name I haven't heard of in a while. I wonder if he ever used PED's? No one's exempt from the finger of suspicion!
