I have a Mitsubishi Colt which needs a servicing ... badly! I cant really afford to pay for a service so I am looking for advice on what the minimum is that I can do myself.

The car passed the NCT this year but it is 2 1/2 years since I serviced it last:eek:

Do many people out there service their own cars?

yep, do it myself as well.....

cheaper then giving it to a dealer,
    you know its done.
and you learn more about your car, very helpful....

Basic service (change filters/plugs) is no hassle at all. Garages charge through the nose for a simple job. Have a look at the servicing thread. There's nothing too difficult about it at all

I do aswell. I'll do brakes too.

I'll leave bigger jobs, such as clutches and timing belts to a mechanic. I probably could do them myself, although I wouldn't trust myself!

Thankfully I've a company car so I don't need to look after that. However, my wife's car is mine (I let her think she owns it!) and I look after it myself. Oil, plugs, filters, brakes. There's nothing you can't do yourself with the right knowledge and equipment. T/belt due next service and I'll do that too.

Get yourself a Haynes manual for the car and see what your willing to take on. If you've the right aptitude for mechanical stuff you might surprise yourself and save a fair few Euros at the same time.

    Go for it.

Exactly.........though no point tackling it if all you have is a set of LIDL screwdrivers and a farmer's toolbox (vicegrips).:D;)
Make sure to dispose of the old oil to a recycling centre and try not to get it on your hands as its carcinogenic.

Only over a VERY long period of time.

Lidl have some good car toolkits at the moment. I'd get some if I wasn't going away for a while. My brother won't let me service his Bora - and he's too scared to do it himself!
