Don't have a list, but the older horror movies are better for proper scares.
Horror movies over the past few years rely on loud music and scenes where you jump. No terror, just shock tactics... useless

    Yea I noticed that myself.
I personally prefer the older horror films to the new ones.

    Hi.
Stay away from any so-called 'Horrors' that have been made in the last few years, they ran out of ideas, I guess.
The old ones are best --
    /The Omen /The Exorcist /The Shining /Poltergiest /Stephen kings 'IT'

    to name but a few...

I have to say 'The Children' is a fairly good horror that's been released recently.

I find asian horrors always seem to scare me.

Shutter, the ring, one missed call, pulse. All have some scary bits

the original texas chainsaw massacre is a classic

and heres a few off the top of my head.. some will be foreign films too..

    switchblade romance (foreign)
    them(foreign)
    eden lake
    dog soldiers
    28 days later
    the descent
    outpost
    alien
    hellraiser
    the shining

all good films some better than others but all worth a watch anyway...

IMO its nigh on impossible to find a genuinely scary movie anymore. The only one that I can think of that provided me with some proper scares was The Orphanage.Alot of people found Rec to be terribly scary, personally I didnt but each to their own.
As for the classics you cant go too far wrong with the original Halloween.Arguably the greatest horror movie of all time.

I often find there's plenty of great horror films out there if you look for them, but it really does depend on what you're after. For example, Let The Right One In was one of the best horror films I've seen in years, but it's not a film I'd consider scary at all. Another film I was extremely impressed with lately was Martyrs, which was certainly scary in places, but on the whole was more downright disturbing.

I'd definitely recommend [Rec] though, it was one of the most intensely scary films I've seen in ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭deanodrummer

Yeah I agree that alot of recent horrors have been big on 'jumpy bits', but no genuine scares.

    Classics are the best.
    The Omen
    The Shining
    The Exorcist
    TCM
    The Innocents
(like a b+w 1960's, scarier version of The Others, which was also good)

The Exorcism of Emily Rose also frightened the **** outta me. Amityville Horror 2005 wasn't bad either.

If you dont mind foreign language films then I would suggest the Spanish movies:
    [Rec]
    The Orphanage.

    Both were really good.

Would agree with Karl Hungus. "Rec" is brilliant. Very Scary. Would also recommend "Them" and "The Descent".

It depends on what you class as "scary" really.

For me tension is the number one scare for me, and [REC] & Them deliver it in bucketloads.

Mum & Dad got to me recently too.

    The Grudge, japanese version
    Saw
    Hostel

I have heard-I intend to see it soon-the the Korean "A tale of two sisters" is excellent. An oldie (1961) that I'd recommend is the original of "The Haunting". The remake is one of the worst films ever made.

    Neither of those are scary.

Eden lake was pretty good imho, pretty new(?) too i think

that was the direct copy remake of [Rec]

A french film called Martyrs is easily the scariest thing I've ever seen, I was pretty apprehensive about the Horror genre until then, now I'm totally cured, there's no way I'll ever see anything as scary as that again:eek:

You'd probably have to get it on amazon though, I'm not sure you can buy it here......

It's in HMV, Xtravision and I even saw it in Tesco. Pretty easy to get a hold of over here it must be said.

Loads of classics but I would add

Blair Witch (controversial but I love it)
    Rec (spanish)
    Martyrs (french)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 notahopeinhell

Them and the original A Tale of Two Sisters, haven't seen the remake (The Uninvited?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭beans

Hang on... Martyrs? If I never see a more ridiculous, pointless movie as long as I live, I'll die a happy man. Dear god, for twenty minutes I held out high hopes, but that was just beyond awful.

I'm at a loss for words. What utter sh!te. Or do explain it, please?

And never mind the fact that it was just brutal nonsense, beyond the first act there was nothing remotely scary about that film. Boring, yes. Frustrating, certainly. Ack, I need to wash my brain out after that - and not because it was affecting, just 'cos it was rubbish.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Martyrs was fantastic. Have a read of this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭beans

On a more positive note, I really love Night of the Living Dead; Dark Water I remember as being a rather decent Asian attempt, The Eye also; it's so hard to find a truly 'scary' film these days that whenever a recommendation conversation gets started re: horror movies, I find myself inevitably recommending things like Return of the Living Dead and Let the Right One In - neither scary, but of the genre and damn fine movies :)

I await the next truly scary movie to come my way with baited breath!

John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" 1987.

Salem's Lot still brings back bad memories

    If you want to see the best the Genre can offer;

    Halloween (original)
    The Mist
    The Abominable Dr. Phibes
    Phantasm
    Audition
    The Birds
    Let The Right One In
Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn
    The Shining
    The Descent
    Aliens
    From Beyond
    Black Sunday
    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
    Switchblade Romance
    Frontiere(s)
    Grindhouse
    Psycho (original)
    Zombi 2

In my opinion, that list about makes up the be all and end all of the Genre.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 698 ✭✭✭Vampireskiss

The orginal Salems Lot and the old versions of Amityville are scary enough

    [REC.] I found VERY scarey!

Wolf Creek is also very good, semi based on a true story too!

Recently watched 30 Days Of Night thought that was pretty decent for a vampire film.

Wolf Creek is very, very, very, very loosely based on a true story. The ratio of fact to fiction is about 99.8% to .2%.

Yes, indeed. No messing around with sexy vampires, suave vampires.....just bloodthirsty monsters.

As far as modern horror films go, I quite liked Drag me to Hell.
It is not your usual gore fest but relies on shocking you when you least expect it plus its quite funny in places

really? when you least expect it?

Couldnt you hear the really loud noises coming from the cinemas soundsystem?

People are going way too over the top about this film, it was good but not that good.

The reason I liked it was because it was funny more than anything else. It reminded me of Evil Dead

That makes more sense, it was certainly funny. I wouldnt class it in my favourite horror films though.

Mind you i dont class Evil Dead in there either when asked about horror, even though i love the films...maybe its just me.

For a really good, scary ghost story, I'd go for The Woman in Black. It's always been my favourite. Gives me chills every time :)

Not sure how readily available it is but I'm sure you could find it on Amazon.

Personally I think Evil Dead is most definitly a horror movie.

Dead By Dawn and Army of Darkness are definitly comic horrors though.

Would agree with this list apart from Aliens (I just wouldn't consider Aliens a horror.. even though its an excellent film), Frontiere (s) - most stupid, pointless 'excuse for gore feast' I have ever seen - I actually put the DVD in the bin.. same for Switchblade Romance.. with the 'twist' in the end ...

    some of my fav's are:

    The Descent
    The Omen (original)
    Xtro
Dawn of the Dead (original and remake)
    Blair witch project
    [Rec]
    28 days later
    The Exorcist

It's more imo, an almost unbearable, suspense movie. I'd liken it to someone pointing a knife right at your eyeball from up close (makes you squint just thinking about it doesn't it). Just the act of it being that close to your eyeball for so long is just unbearable.

A tale of two sisters is like this. It just builds and builds the tension and suspense... unlike most horrors it never gives a momentary release and reset, it's constant for the majority of the film.

I watched The Fly last year on Halloween, and it really freaked me out. Maybe it's because the thought of literally turning into a monster always freaked me out (:pac:), but I really do think The Fly is genuinely scary.

Other than that nothing really gives me a genuine fright anymore.

Add The Mist to the list. If you want to be mooded out, then this is the film for you. :(

    The Others
    The Shining
are the two movies which can give me chills even on repeated viewings
    Ring (Japanese version)
Dawn of the Dead remake is a good Zombie film

    Teeth - A horror movie if you're a man! ;)
