My friends and family all seem to disagree with me on this.Does anyone else think its a disgrace that the GAA has sold themselves again on a weekend deep in the summer with a fair amount of games on.

    Donegal-Galway
    Meath-Roscommon
    Kildare-Wicklow
    Antrim-Kerry

    Antrim -Offaly
    Clare-Wexford
    Dublin-Limerick
    Galway-Waterford

Some of these games may have dissapointed yesterday but thats not the point. There Should have been a double header in Croke Park on both days.
Possibly the Antrim Games on Saturday and Kildare-Wicklow and Dulin-Limerick today.

I just thinks its awful that the likes of the Antrim and Wicklow footballers havnt got a chance to play in Croke Park after getting on so well this year
Thats just my view!Agree or Disagree

Should U2 be playing in Croke Park right in the middle of the Championship season? 46 votes

    eh of course they should.

could all of those teams together - possible in 3 seperate days - fill it 3 times?

do we not have several other stadiums big eneough to fit the teams anyway????

I don't like the poll options because theres an implicit assumption that the games would/should have been in Croke Pk if it wasn't for the U2 gigs.

Whereas I'd be a believer in keeping Croke Pk 'special' and only having the semi-finals/final there (and Dublin home games).

Even the football quarter finals should be home advantage for the provincial winners imo.

anything that can get at least 55000 or more should be in croker - more atmosphere and use.

No, it is good that games are played in other parts of the country other than croke park. Better to have a packed 15,000 stadium than an almost empty croke park.

Also but of extra cash is good for the GAA.

Finally, I was at the gig on friday, great occassion. Why not have irelands biggest band play in irelands biggest stadium.

Also - serious one sided poll there!

    (and Dublin home games).

Whats wrong with Parnell Park for this?

Please do not turn this into another Dublin versus the rest crap fest

The options are to loaded IMO, so I have edited the poll to be a straight yes or no. Will probably get a more realistic range of opinions this way.

being the 125th year of the gaa and all that, it's nice to see where hq has it's priorities.

couldn't u2 have played in the phoenix park instead? (not there fault of course).

would wembely stadium (or any other premership team during the football season) allow concerts occur in month before fa cup final or english internationals? (probably would lol)

Evidently Phoenix Park is terrible for concerts, particurly ones this big.

Another big pay day for the GAA, no problem with it at all.

If I'm selfish I'd want all those matches in Croker but the GAA are going to make a fortune off the gig

Meant to vote no, U2 are tax dodging scum. No way should they use a facility part funded by the taxpayer, not them as they dont pay tax.

OP you are right and your family and friends are wrong. They probably like Bono's rubbish 'music' if you can call that noise that.

I think they shouldn't. But money is the winner at the end of the day.

The Atmosphere in Portlaoise yesterday was electric - I've never seen the like since we drew with Meath in the year of the draws. Everyone was there to see their team win - either Kildare or Wicklow. It wouldn't have been the same in Croker. If it was a double header then half the fans wouldn't really care about the outcome (I know there were a few Banner and Yellabelly's there but only saw one wexfordman.)

Almost full stadia are better than empty ones for atmosphere - Croker kills it unless it's full. ( except on Paddy's day)

I was in Croker on Friday too by the way.

None of the games listed would have half-filled Croker on their own or as a double header. There were 30,000 people in Thurles today.

    Money talks.

    Are u serious?

Why are they scum? Very harsh choice of words and uncalled for.Because they choose to base themselves outside the state financially i think that is a very asture move.

Bon's rubbish music is your personal and your entitled to it but a quarter of a million people who will pack Croker over the weekend and Monday will disagree.

I have been going to GAA games all my life, most weekends, and very few have been in Croker. I suppose I have only been there 50 of so times in my life. 2 of them have been for U2 and I am going again tomorrow:D. I've been to some soccer games there too.
I was fairly much against opening Croke Park to Soccer etc oringinally, but I have changed my mind. Most GAA intercounty games are no longer suited to Croke Park. Maybe they shouldnt have built it so big - I'm not sure. I think it lacks atmosphere when it isn't that full. Not everyone wants to go to double headers - I dont like them anyway. If you are travelling a distance one game is enough and usually you have very little interest in the other game. And it seems to take a double header to justify Croker - unless its a semi final or Dublin are involved. There are lots of excellent GAA stadia around the country for better atmosphere and less travelling.

We have lost something though I feel - Croke Park is seen as the National Stadium now, not as the home of GAA. We have gained too though - the GAA gets the credit and the money. Thats important. And at the end of the day the people going to see U2 and Kevin Doyle and Paul OConnell are the same people who are at GAA games as well.

Final point: U2 are an exceptional Rock Band, still making excellent Albums after 30 years, and I dont see why insulting them has any relevance to this thread.

half a million a gig!! the gaa would be mad to refuse any concert!!:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,235 ✭✭✭✭flahavaj

The GAA should have charged them double the price that they would charge anyone else to make up for all the taxes they've avoided paying.:pac:

I just hope the newly relaid pitch is ready ontime for the QF's on Saturday.

Gaa sold themselves out for this. if u2 really wanted this stadium, they could ahve waited 2 months. i had an argument with a Dub fan about this today, who claimed it was a great thing and GAA were correct.

i made a point to him, which was - next weekend, Bernard Brogan breaks free in the last minute. Kerry are winning by 2 points, Brogan rounds Murphy and with the Hill goal wide open, he slips on his backside on a pitch that was relaid 3 days earlier. imagine the uproar.

its great to see that Bono and his dodgy cronies, have been given more respect over Mr Brogan, Cavanagh, Galvin, Canty and co next weekend and indeed this weekend.

    its a joke.

OR, more realistically; Bernard Brogan breaks free in the last minute, and doesn't slip and scores the winning goal to beat Kerry. The hill erupts, Dub fans go home happy and the GAA look back on a successful weak, Dublin beating Kerry and getting €1.5m revenue from the gigs. EVERYONE (except the tiny Kerry support) is happy :-)

Gingy, whether Dublin win or not next weekend is not the point,i'msure there's another thread for that.Whatever team wins next weekend,be it by half-time or in the dying moments,if players are slipping and sliding all over the pitch or it digging up in divots, there will be uproar.

I honestly think that will be the case come next sunday evening. It took them years to get the perfect attributes(don't think this is the right word to use)for the turf at HQ and now I don't understand how can they possibly relay this pitch, coming in from England(Another Day,Another Thread),in 3 days for 2,maybe 3 games next weekend.

My prediction:The pitch will tear up just like Wembley did for its first FA Cup final after re-opening(http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8006546.stm)

    Time will tell all!

I voted yes for the simple reason of why should all championship games be played in HQ? It is a far distance for everyone to travel to and there are some other great GAA grounds around the country. Why not use them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 997 ✭✭✭Colm R

No problem with the gig at all, provided the get the pitch down correctly. And the people they get in to this work will know what they are doing. It not really going to be a few committee members on tractors in fairness.

I'm guessing they'll start relaying from Davin end after the gig tongiht and work down as the stage makes its exit.

we have already been over this, no they couldn't ffs u2 are in the middle of their usa tour in 2 months, the usa leg starts september 12 and goes on till november, what they leave LA or san francisco one night and bring all their gear and stage back to ireland and then head back to the states with all the gear/stage

What difference does it make, when do you see a GAH match played on the ground? The pitch can be relayed in 24 hours sure... It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever they should have let U2 play all week.

I agree 100% with your sentiments a chara. It seems GAA is an afterthought in the home of GAA just to facilitate an overrated group who don't even pay their tax here. Absolutely ridiculous. I don't think this shambles would happen anywhere else. I've no issue with U2 using Croke Park, just the timing of when they decided to plough up the pitch irks me.

A number of fixtures could indeed have been played in HQ last weekend if a music band didn't get preference to use it.
