Moving to Greystones: Broadband/TV options etc.

    Hi all,

I'm moving to Greystones in the next month or two having just taken the plunge into the icy waters of the Irish housing market.

Starting to look into my options re broadband and TV - will be moving into a house in Heathervue in September.

For TV, I'm starting to think that Sky are more or less the only show in town if I want Sky Sports - true or false?

For broadband, people seem to generally recommend steering clear of Eircom. UPC are a non-runner as I believe they're Charlesland only. Digiweb Metro seem to get some good press - has anyone any experience of their 8mb product? Or anyone feel the 12mb is worth the €25 extra a month?

All suggestions/info welcome... get ready for a steady flow of annoying questions from me over the next few months as we get to know the area!

    cheers,

    gh.

ps You may see a previous post from me re renting in Burnaby Mews - that all got cancelled as we ended up buying a place instead.... so ignore that question!

the cable system in Greystones is pretty antiquated and I don't think you can get the digital service on it, but you may be able to get NTL's MMDS service - this works via a specialised aerial and has around 100 channels (with Sports and Movies available) - no broadband though. Personally I'd go for Sky over NTL every time.

BT's 24Mb service is available in Greystones - how much bandwidth you actually get depends on your distance from the telephone exchange. BT have just sold their residential business to Vodafone, BT's customer service has a terrible reputation, but Vodafone might be better. Digiweb have a pretty good rep, but I don't know anyone using them locally.

We have NTL digital and don't have any problems with it and for broadband we have eircom and for the most part it is good, had one or two occaisons when couldn't get online but that all in all we are happy with it.

Have had broadband from Eircom for last 4 years witout any trouble.
Lately we did have about 3 nights where we couldn't get online for approx an hour or so but the problem has been solved. Seems like there was an attack on the Eircom system.
We have Sky and so far no problems, UPC/Chorus was a disaster for us last year after being on cable since it was first installed in Greystones.

I have BT Broadband and it works great!! Greystones is in one of their new upgraded exchanges so you get their 24 MB Broadband (or whatever the line can hold) for the price of 3MB!! Sweet!!

I have the 24Mb from BT Ireland package and I live just around the corner from Heathervue.

I can get speeds of up to 17Mb but normally around 14Mb. The BT modem is crap and it drops the line every so often but apart from that it is cool.
