Best season? (possible spoilers)

My vote for best season would go to season three.

It seems to me to be the pivotal part of the whole epic, with the beginning of the theme about the kids, and the introduction of Cutty. There is also the development of McNulty, the beginning of the politics theme, Marlo, and the last real police investigation, before the one that McNulty basically invents in season five. You have those great scenes when Stinger is running his meetings as if he were a CEO, insisting everything is said through the chair, and then Shamrock starts taking minutes of the drug cooperative. Pres melts down and Avon and Stringer betray each other. It's classic.

What makes the series is Hamsterdam, though. Colvin is a great character, and the whole approach to drug policing, the hypocrisy and the futility is exposed, as welll as the intrigue behind the political reaction. And you've got great scenes like Rawls being spotted in the gay bar, and Omar and Brother Mousone teaming up to hit String. It works on all levels.

For what it's worth, after no.3 I think comes one, then two, then four, then five, simply because McNulty's invention of a serial killer seems just a little too far fetched to really believe. But then they are all great, in their way.

I must say Season 2 was a lot better second time around. I liked the characters from the docks.

Has to be season 1 id say just because the wire was recommended to me so i said id check it out, little did i know i would become absolutely obsessed. I watch the whole first series in a weekend:eek:

I dont see why everyone hate the second series, it was a good change of senery.

The third series was the least best imo

I suppose I agree with the four posters thus far, in that I can't decide which is my favourite, apart from Season 5. Gun to my head, I'd go with Season 2, but it's really close.

Season 2, total change of direction

I love them all, but without a doubt, Season two purely because it was the most satisfied I have EVER been after watching a series finale.

Great characters, nicely paced and a wonderful arc over the whole season. My only real gripe with the whole 5 series' is that Ziggy never reappered. :(

Oh! And who could forget the duck! :D

    For me

    1. Season 2
    2. Season 4
    3. Either one of Season 1, 3 or 5 ( I've still the last 3 eposides of 5 to watch)

Choosing your favourite season of the wire is like sophies choice:D Too damn hard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,720 ✭✭✭✭Penn

If I was pushed, I'd say:

    2
    4
    3
    1
    5

Although 2 & 4, and 3 & 1 regularly switch with each other. I definitely think either 2 or 4 was the best season, the other being second best. Then its a choice between 3 and 1.

Season 5 is still great. But I just had too many gripes with it. Plus as its a shorter season than the rest, things felt a bit rushed

Season 4 for me,it had more of an impact. In the earlier seasons, when something bad happened to a character, you could mostly say "ah I suppose they sorta deserved it" for being a drug dealer etc but most of the kids in 4 had done nothing wrong.

Season 4 for me, it was just harrowing and so very sad. I really started to care! And to understand how they borner boys were recruited from such a young age! Loved it.

Season 4 was terrific. Without a doubt the best. Closely followed by Season 2.

The whole addition of the school system and the 4 young lads Namond, Michael, Dukie and Randy made the series. Season 4 also gave more screen time to great characters like Snoop, Carcetti, Norman Wilson, the brilliant Bunny Colvin and Omar Little.

When I first watched Season 2 it didn't particularly stand out over season 1 but with time I now regard it as one of the best seasons. Again, the characters are what made the season: Ziggy and Nicky Sobotka, The GReek, Spiros Vondos, Sergei Malatev.

start watching the whole lot for the second time with the wife (she hasnt seen any before). We have just start watching season 3 and Hamptsterdam is about to start. My favourite season first time around was prob 3 or 4, but i have to say the first season is absolute quality and 2 the second time around is far better than the first time... not that i didnt like it the first time either.

I think i´d have to say Season 2.

At the end of season 1 i just didn´t know what was going to happen, i couldn´t guess what was going to happen next with most of the characters seemingly tied up.

What i started watching 2 i was in shock, a whole new setting and set of characters, so far away from what had come before. And although it took me a few episodes to learn who everyone was I got so into it. As a story I loved season 2 and i love the fact they were brave enough to almost leave everything that made season 1 so great behind and so something different.

Season 4 with the kids was fantastic, but I found the ending to be really depressing.

I´d agree that the serial killer from season 5 was just a tad too far and while it didn´t ruin it, it just brought it down a slight bit.

Personally I thought Series 2 and 5 were poor compared to the overall quality they were capable of. Knowing how good the first series was, I stuck through 2, and was delighted to see 3&4 back, better than ever.

    Season 4.
+1 there. Took me awhile to get into it but I think it was a terrific series given two main characters from a previous series were not there.

What is it about Season five. They just seemed to go off in a totally different direction with the charachters. It has a "bonfire of the Vanities" look to it.
I just dont know how plausible the whole storyline with the "homeless killings" was. Ended up portraying the newspaper, Police force, and political system in a very unfavourable light which was a bit of a departure from Season four where they tackled the whole education system very well.
I have seen season five twice now and certainly it is the poorest of the lot.

Sadly season 5 isn't even all that good when compared to the excellence of the previous 4. The newspaper guys are rubbish copy & the McNulty/Freamon storyline is totally unbelievable. Kima's betrayal too was not in the spirit of the show imo.

    Season 1 is my favourite, followed by 2, 4 & 3.
    Still the greatest show ever.

    For me it was 1,3,4,5 & 2.
Just couldn't get into season 2 at all after the brilliant 1st season. Don't think 5 was as bad as everyone says. I think people just expected too much knowing it was the last season. Season 3 was something special though. I didn't know how they were going to carry on without Stringer but they somehow improved it. Unbelievable show

I've just started seasons 5 but so far.

    4, 3, 1, 2.

    Great god damn show.

    Season 2 for me

It took some balls for david simon to uproot the story from the west side projects and bring in the docks. On the first viewing i didnt really get season two but second time around when you know where things are going and the struggle that frank faces its just an amazing season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,078 ✭✭✭theCzar

Sobotka ftw. One of the most likeable characters in the whole run through. Ziggy got on my tits, which he was supposed to I guess. Its funny about how much I disliked Valchek after season 2, but I warmed to him later, such a bastard.
Thought it was hilarious he ended up as Commisioner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭anotherlostie

My favourite season was definitely Season 4 in the school. Season 5 was my least favourite, mainly for the stupid serial killer storyline and the lacklustre newspaper based story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Spacedog

season 5, i love the way it takes all the main characters, and completly magnafies them to an extreme, mc nulty going round the bend, more drink, more insabordination, omar pulling a spiderman, marlo going supervillan on prop joe. I was worried that it was going to get all weird and tired like OZ did around series 5, but Simon kept the story tight and coherant. The series of the wire are like chapters in a book and 5 was a great and fitting ending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭conf101

I think season 5 is much better than it's getting credit for but I do think that they failed to develop the whole newspaper storyline and it's characters as much as they could have. When you look at the docks or the school system and how good a job they did with them then you realise that the newspaper didn't live up to the standard.

Fav season for me is a toss up between 3 and 4.

    Season 4 is my favourite.

Just started watching season1 again. Has anyone noticed how badly 'Herc' aged from 1to5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭asdfgh86

Season Three all the way for me, The Avon/Stringer tension, the introduction of Marlo. What really makes the 3rd season though is Bunny's 'Hampsterdam' idea. It brings up so many interestings arguments for AND against the legalisation of drugs, really makes you think.

Season 2 or 4, loved both of them and I could pick either or but I went with 4 just because I thought Michael, Snoop and Chris were great characters although you gotta love the Sobotkas!
