PIckled Turnip recipe (yes seriously!)

    Hi all,
just managed to find a really good sounding pickled turnip recipe (they're supposed to be amazing actually) but haven't found any with sugar in them. The brine basically consists of water salt and vinegar rather than pure vinegar, salt and sugar and I'm wondering is the sugar necessary for these to store in the longterm?
Does anyone have any recipe for these which lasts a year? Or would anyone hazard a guess at how much sugar could be added in to keep them longer?
    Thanks!
