This thread was inspired by the mighty Dav's, "What gear surprised you" thread.

Just wondering what hardware or software you felt didn't live up to your expectations.

PC - all sorts, access violations, buffer underflows. just a ton of stuff on a 100% qualified machine - been onto digi support about it all and they have no solutions.. just that they're working on the many bug fixes that are needed.

and its not just a PC thing before you start :p

check out the DUC. folks are screaming at digi left right and centre over there.. i think digi need to put the head down and re-code from the ground up!

Problems problems problems! Whats up DT? I swear on my mothers life my PT 8 rig runs really well, no errors or problems. I have no doubt that you are having issues but I really think this is a PC issue.

Access violations must be a vista issue. I use a laptop and have vista and it is a pain at the best of times. Buffer underflows, have you tried switching to using 2 cores isntead of 4 or 8 for that matter?

Hands down PT8 works perfect for me and I adore the program, it is brilliant, so from my angle they have done a great job, isn't it funny how two peoples experiences with the same program are completely different. Ah well I hope you get it sorted dude there is nothing worse than issues.

nothin to do with vista. im on xp sp3.

the access violations are something to do with mcdsp plugins and pace drivers. pace are saying its digi and digi are saying its pace.

i ran a monster session on 7.4 yesterday without a single hiccup so im happy for the moment anyway.

still wish i could use 8 as its a lot nicer on the eyes if nothing else!

The 'visualness' of 8 is indeed a big plus to my eyes . Disappointing the whole rig doesn't work well.

Anyone else with the same experience of PT8 ?

What are those big KRKs ?
They made no sense to me at all.

If they sounded half as good as they looked I'd have been very impressed.

they're actually beautiful to listen to. lovely "hi-fi" sound to them.. piss poor for mixing on though!

speaking of which those samson rubcions with the ribbon tweeters really didnt do it for me. really really harsh highs and lacking any balls.

im beginning to suspect pace to be a small source of PT8 woes!

PT8 WORKS FINE FOR ME EXCEPT IT CRASHES WITH SOME VST'S which was in 7 as well but thats probably cause some of them are free vst's and a bit suspect, other than that i think its the shizzle, nothing comes near it, although there is hype for logic!

    AKG C214

Marketing said it was to be very similar to the 414 without the pickup pattern switch. Not the same at all. Very disappointing. It sounded completely different when I done a quite a few AB tests with the 414.

I think we had that one up before !

I didn't see it before. Not in this thread anyway. It's still a decent mic and ok value for money but not what I was expecting at all. Especially from what I read about it.

PT8 works perfectly fine on Macs so it is a PC issue. There is a very good reason I am always saying that Macs are better for audio. On the other hand no matter what platform you use one shouldn't be experiencing any issues at all, it's cracker jack Mac Pc Mac Plat.

not true at all dav. take a trip over to DUC and have a look. there's people on ALL platforms with LE, m-powered and HD crying out with PT8 problems.

one of the biggest mac issues seems to be the play/pause issue, which although is being complained about on some PC configurations, certainly isnt as prominent. but on the other hand we have our own set of problems, access violation being one of them.

No, I think it was shortly after it came out.

Access Virus KC. Some great sounds but totally unreliable and they expect you to ship it to Germany for repairs.

Do you have to pay for the shipping? No local repairs?

    If so, that's not good.

Yes you have to pay shipping and you would need insurance. It's a heavy 5 octave keyboard so shipping isn't cheap. Also the price of the repair would have the price of sending the keyboard back to you added on. In fairness to Access the keyboard was out of warranty BUT for a keyboard that retailed for around £1500 the warranty was only 6 months! I think that says something about their faith in the product. I tried contacting a Dublin Access distributor but they don't do the repairs. In order to try and get round sending it to Germany I took it to a good repair man in Glasgow. He so far hasn't been able to fix it as Access haven't been helpful with regards circuit diagrams/diagnostic information. I have read other people who have send their keyboard to Germany waiting many months for it's return. From my experience I would be reluctant to by anything by Access again. I also have a Novation Supernova which imho is a better and more reliable synth for anyone considering buying a Virus.

I'm not sure if this counts but I have a list of studio equipment that has really disapointed me over the years and I sold pretty sharpish...

    Beyerdynamic DT100 Headphones
Industry standard apparently but I never liked them. Sold my 2 pairs and bought 3 pairs of Audio Technica ATH-M40s and a pair of ATH M-50s with the proceeds.

    Neumann TLM 103,
Has the famous name but didnt do it for me. Sold it and bought a load of old Gefell Neumanns on ebay.de. The UM70 is a classic mic.

    M-Audio Pro Keys 88
Yuck, horrible piano sounds, like a banjo..

Joe Meek Twin Q and the lower end valve TL Audio preamps
Had an old half rack VC3Q which I really liked. The Twin Q just sucked compared to it.
When I bought my Langevin DVC and ISA 428 I realised that I had to part ways with my old TL Audio stuff. I guess it'll be a couple of API's next. I'm happy where I am for now:D

They're industry standard for two reasons I think - durability and the fact everything in them is available as a spare part.

They sound Kak .... the 150's are a much better buy.
