Just reading on The Shining Remake thread that another Dredd movie has been greenlit which is fantastic news

so let’s hope someone like Christopher Nolan gets the director’s chair. Have you any better recommendations who you would like to see direct?

Racking my brain to come up with an actor to play Dredd though, I always wanted Clint Eastwood instead of meathead Stallone but unfortunately he is a bit past it now.

    Who would you cast?

The only person fit to play the part imo was Arnold Swarzenneger,Sly Stallone was a pathetic choice and made the film into a joke with his mumbling and spluttering.
Obviously, arnie is past it now too so they may have to start looking for a (relative) unknown.

I personally want to see Ron Pearlman as Dredd. I think he's got the stature and age to pull it off.

Here are some concept pics for the new movie :

Notice the original suit, unlike the remodelled one from the 95 movie.

You did see the first one, right? Who'd have thought the powerhouse of Stallone & Schneider would be so downright painful to watch?!

Schwarzenegger is / was far too bulky for the role of Dredd. Dredd is lean and muscular, not bulky like Arnie or Sly.

We need someone rough around the edges, mid 50's and fit.

The 2012 movie is a remake and its going to be a lot darker and closer to the comic book story line.

Since the 1995 movie and the case of "The People of Earth Vs Rob Schneider, 1996" there was a ruling that meant that Schnieder can't appear in "buddy" context in a super hero movie ever again under penalty of death.

He could at least have a cameo as a carrot..!

Because of some strange idea, I'd assumed for some weird reason, that the new Dredd actor would have to be English, because of the comic's origin.

    Clearly Megacity One isn't though!

Yet: try putting a mask over this man's chin...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Everett

(That's 80% joke, 20% serious as well, by the way.)

    EDIT:

Also - I hope the "Rebellion" reference is in name only; and that the new film isn't doing to be sharing any of the writing team that made Rebellion's "Dredd vs. Death" computer game.

    That was "mediocre" at best.

Rebellion Developments are a games company, but they also currently own 2000AD and are its publishers. Who knows where they'll source the writing team from, though. Even if they do go for someone from the history of the comic that's no guarantee of quality - Garth Ennis had two runs on it, for instance, and the second has been panned by loads of people including Ennis himself(!).

I'm cautiously optomistic about this. The last one was done at a time when practical special effects were too cheap and digital special effects were too expensive. Add to this the piss poor raping of Dredd storylines and dodgy as hell casting, the film never stood a chance.

But this one could...ah who am I kidding, they'll just f*ck it up again.

Better keep the helmet on this time

I actually like the original Dredd Film. They got a lot of things right and it was only parts of the script which let them down. Schneider was a mistake and the lack of vioolence was odd but Megacity One, The Judges and the Outlands all looked fantastic. Stallone wasn't too bad either.

For the remake they need Ron Perlman or dare I say it Vin Diesel as Dredd.

Little know fact but Chris Cunningham worked on the film as did someone I know.

This is the only comic I enjoyed reading as a child. I really hope it is made well, unlike the original movie...sometimes remakes are necessary.

I've always pictured Clint Eastwood as Dredd, but then again, Dredd was based on a Dirty Harry type officer...though one that always followed the Law.

The Stallone movie got the look of Mega City 1 spot on and the Angle Gang were perfect. Sadly the rest of the movie sucked balls.

Dredd losing the helmet, Dredd being the only judge to have the eagle shoulder pad, Fergie the comic relief sidekick, Hershey harping on about friendship and the whole love story have no part in a Dredd movie.

Christan Bale seeing as he has no problem with wearing a mask onscreen :)

Losing the helmet was a mistake but even with a sequel no major sar is going to sign on to play Dredd if they are constanly hidden. Well exceprt perhaps Nic Cage but nobody wants that.

The film did get a lot wrong but it got a lot right also. You can't simply make a film for the fans you have to open it up to the wider audience. I accept that from my comic book adaptations and while we could piss and moan about what they did wrong all night what's the point. Money is going to decide how the film is made. I would like a medium budgeted 50-60 million film with Ron Perlman and a competant director who is a fan of the source material. What we will get will be a big budget, PG13 action fest starring the flavour of the month.

    Hugh Jackman

Good call as long as the helmet stays on. I was always hoping for Clint to get the role, but Jackman has a similar look to Clint at times, and has the right build and height for the role. He would have to work on the voice though.

Clint could still be in it though as Chief Judge McGruder (think about how the character was drawn after coming back from the Cursed Earth with a male body and look that was not totally unlike Clint at times)

Dont get a major star then. Not like any real actor can do justice to Dredd voice so effects gonna be needed there anyways.

That's the problem, the Studio will not invest in a major film like that without a star. They did with Superman Returns, but Superman was pretty much guaranteed to be a success. Dreed is nowhere near as popular and would be virtually unknow in America if it were not for the first film.

Superman Returns problems were more due to aweful script than actor tbh. Idealy a star who is also a Dredd fan is whats needed.

I liek Returns though the script was certainly lacking, at least they didn't go with the giant spider. Brandan Routh is a fantastic actor and I cannot wait to see him int he Dylan Dog film. I still think that Ron Perlman or Vin Diesel would be perfect for Dredd, both are very good actors. And you know that if signed both would keep the helmet on.

I don't know about Vin Diesel, but I'd say Ron Perlman would be perfect.

Honestly, Judge Dredd definitely needs a new adaptation, the 95 had it's moments, but on the whole it was poor.

Diesel gots a lot of slack from soem people but the man can act. And you have to respect him for the way he does business. Threatening to walk off Riddick if the studio didn't pay Judi Dench more money.

Perlman would be my first choice though, I'm looking at a Hellbnoy 2 poster on my wall atm and imagining the helmet on him. In my mind it looks very well.

Honestly, I don't dislike Vin Diesel, but his best role was The Iron Giant, it's all been downhill since.

He is excellent in Pitch Black and Find Me Guilty. Really lookign forward to his Hannibal the Conqueror and the next Riddick film. The man has talent just needs to find a better way of picking projects.

Ture, it is perhaps his only role to date which can reduce grown men to tears.
