The BBNet Thread

    Hello,

Seems like there is no running thread on BBNet, while their competitors Ice and Three (yeah, I know three is not broadband but it's still a competitor) have theirs.

I got BBNet installed yesterday. So far it's quite good - with real upload speed of 1 Mb/s, which is more than Eircom offers on any package. VOIP (Skype and Voipcheap) work fine. Their man was very helpful when installing - he even told me how to use an existing Eircom wireless router as an access point; their own devide (on the roof) provides the NAT and DHCP so I don't need to buy a router now. He did take a couple of hours to install but I realize wireless has to be set up carefully; in fact he replaced the "box" with the "bullet" (long distance antenna) on directions from office when the signal received by their base station from the box was too weak. The bullet fixed it.

Will report progress as time goes on; any other experiences also welcome.

Just had first issue - some pings lost, sites timeout. Shane on support was very helpful and the issue was resolved within 30 minutes.

    (Weather is nice and bright).

You only get long running threads on ISPs that are a problem.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

They seem quite badly over priced though, 1up 1 down with 10gb allowance for €39

Looking at providers i can get in Kerry
    Kerry Broadband:2Mb/1Mb €34.99 unlimited
    Permanet:1.792mb/.256mb €45 unlimited

They're quite over priced imo and a bad download limit for there basic package..

Suppose as long as they supply a stable connection its good!

ive said it before im with them for ages now in limerick.. one issue with signal...i rang at 11am while i was in work buy the time i got home at 5:30 it was fixed..i deal with ISP'S every day and BBnet have to be one of the best small ISP's out there...

Basic 1M down 0.128M up DSL is about €50 on eircom when you add the line rental (the most expensive line rental anywhere).

WORKING broadband for €40 a month is a sustainable price. You do realise that the €20 Mobile packages actually are subsidized by voice, the same price Voice package costs the Mobile company 150x to 500x less!

Backhaul outside Dublin for your ISP is amongst the most expensive in Europe, if not the developed world. :( That is using CIE/ESAT-BT or ESB fibre, which is much cheaper than eircom's backhaul.

Woah didn't notice ASDL would be that much
I'll be possibly upgrading to a 2mb/1mb service for €34.99 and i thought that was alot!

If you think that is bad, Excess traffic per 1024MByte (aka 1GByte) is €501.76 on "3 Ireland" PAYG tarriff.

On the pay as you go tariff??

How can they do that?No one would have that much in their PAYG account:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

If you buy a 30 Day PAYG top up and use the traffic in 3 days (which is about possible) then until the next 27 days are up any further top-up you buy to get on line is used up at 49c per Mbyte which works out over €500 a Gigabyte.

Either that or wait till the 27 days have passed.

Several of my customer in area's outside of Limerick City are using BBnet and I have yet to have any issue that is not resolved quickly and professionally Barry and his staff are excellent! I have had problems of one kind or another with other providers Digi Web - Take a bow!! where clients have had no service for days at a time!

But as a wireless internet service provider BBnet have not let me down yet.

The coverage maps on the site are a great help but as Barry has said to me in the past are really a guide. If you are near a coverage area then they can normally get you connected ( Signal permitting )

Hopefully with their coverage increasing some places that still cannot get broadband will have some other options soon.
I still cant believe that in this day and age I still have customers on ISDN! as the best value connection available!

    Pat.

Dont normally post here but had to give my twopence worth.

I had BBnet installed and had nothing but constant issues with them. Latency was through the roof and gaming was not possible. VOIP, you might as well forget it. Rang customer support a number of times and was always told that their end was ok and it must be my computer despite trying a few PC's.
Eventually cancelled and got ADSL and everything works just fine. When I cancelled, I had a dolly bird call to the house representing BBnet pleading me to stay with them.

My opinion, a total waste of money.

Anyone else getting absolutely no connection with BBnet for the last two days? Can't seem to get on their website either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭MichaelR

BBnet is working fine for me. But they were doing some maintenance two days ago (and were off for a couple of hours).

Just found that I can not open their Website too! However the rest of the Internet seems to work fine.

Here's their office number for you: 061364315 . I suggest you call them with your issue.

They seem to be using OpenDNS. So try OpenDNS yourself: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

I've been with BBnet for 18 months now and have to say that they are very quick to resolve any issues that have come up & they have been few and far between. Shane is great to phone back too & check that any problems are resolved.....you wouldn't get that from the big companies!!! I am working from home & need a reliable service. Highly recommended.

Have them since July. There was a couple of issues but always quickly resolved.

Hi guys, about time I joined this forum

I'm looking into getting broadband at home, but have no phone line, and mobile dongles have all been horrid for me (tried 3, Vodafone, O2 etc.).

I'm currently located close to where the map is centered below.

Apparently, BBNet's wireless broadband service will cover my area: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=103558221160570955556.000452a304b58277a3c22&ie=UTF8&ll=52.506818,-8.989563&spn=0.077737,0.222988&t=p&z=13

I'm just wondering, are these guys any good (I plan on doing all the usual net browsing stuff, along with upload/downloading music/videos, and potentially playing on XBox live), or are there better alternatives out there?

Thanks in advance for any replies

    Here's a BBNet thread.

Is getting a phone line an option, or is DSL even available in your area?

Phone line isn't really an option, since I'll have to pay for connection and line rental myself, and that's too expensive for me atm.

    I don't think DSL's available either.

Now, the minimum package from BBNet is 39 Euro a month. There may also be a connection charge - not sure what is their policy at the moment.

If this is not too expensive, contact them and ask them to check your particular place for coverage.

The main alternatives to them are:

    - phone/DSL - if you can get it
    - "mobile broadband", but beware of significant quality issues
    - Ice Broadband - another stationary broadband provider, unlike BBNet it is known for REAL BAD issues and unresponsive customer support

Throw it away and buy yourself a cheapo Belkin cable wireless router in Argos for under 40 quid.

    You could just bridge it?

    Meaning the poster saves €40.

rang them over 2 months ago and was told they would be putting a transmitter up in my area-Dromina,co. Cork within 4-6 weeks rang back the other day still no sign of it and they dont know when it will be available, very disappointed as the prices are very resonable compared to others

The ping seems quite good, good enough for XBox Live I presume?

Does anyone have this in the limerick area? What speeds are you getting and what sort of ping, is it any good for online gaming or sky on demand?

Thanks, my mobile broadband is running out soon and have been looking at options. The monthly download allowance is terrible on mobile broadband so was looking at bbnet as I can't get fixed line broadband - line can only handle 1mb. Was looking at "air" broadband in limerick (patrickswell/adare) area - what are my alternatives?
