I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction for getting a new laptop, I have been going to the regular shops looking at laptops and if I'm being honest I don't know what add-ons are important to have and what add-ons are effectively useless gimmicks as far as I'm concerned for what I use it for!!

what I want is quite basic, a laptop which I can use:

    Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint

    the Internet

    iTunes

    and watch DVD's,

price range I suppose would range as far as 600ish-in this day and age I would hope I could meet my demands for less than 600!
    any pointers are greatly appreciated

For 600 you should get a fine laptop.

    This is quite acceptable:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=477001

    It's got a
-decent dual-core procossor (unfortunately only a Pentium Dual core, but at this budget a Core2Duo is pushing it),
    -4GB ram (tonnes),
-320GB HDD (plenty big), and a
-decent (for the money) discrete graphics card that will help a lot with HD video playback etc.

All in it's quite nice specs for the money. The screen resolution could be a touch higher (and preferable 16:10), but beggars can't be choosers. Even if you don't go for it, you should use those specs as an idea of what you can get for the money.
