    Hey folks,

just to try to gather some opinions, what type of venue/capacity of venue do some of you live guys think a rig like this would suit/be capable in?

    2/3 of these a side

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/db_technologies_flexsys_f15.htm

    2 of these a side

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/db_technologies_sub_18_d.htm

somebody was just asking me about a particular place recently and i've been trying to price a cheap enough system for them, without it being terrible.

cheers guys, any opinions are welcome

    Jimmy

Hi, what venues are you playing or looking to play? or is it an install?

1 of the mid hi's a side will be enough if your running 2 subs a side, you always want at least double the bottom end.... and with 90° x 40° you have enough dispersion goin on :D

You will play pubs - average sized nightclubs with that setup and it will sound nice, with a good desk, graphic etc....

    Good luck.

While I haven't heard the Flexsys range, I've used a fair bit of dB Technologies stuff in the past, it's cheap and cheerful and gets the job done without ever sounding fantastic.

That said, if you're talking in terms of coverage then I'm sure that rig could do pubs and clubs easily enough (probably overkill for small bars tho). I'd go with 2 subs + 1 top per side tbh. You don't wanna be putting 2 tops next to each other pointing the same direction, if the dispersions overlap you'll have nasty destructive comb filtering going on.

cheers guys, that is indeed helpful!

Its pretty much an install. And it'd be a relatively big room, thats why i was going for the two tops, don't think just the one would cut it. So another sub or two either side would be needed if there was two tops, you guys reckon?

To be honest, i'm a bit sketchy about that system anyway, i'd much recommend a line array system. I know DB do this one:

    http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~dB-Technologies-DVA---System-2~ID~8872.asp

how do you think this compares? it is only one side really though. it wouldn't really be plausible to split this one into a sub and two tops a side, would it? considering the dispersion

(i'm not specifically looking at DB either, they just seem to be well priced for the power available, but yea, i've not heard many DB systems either and i'm sure they aren't the most eloquent sounding speakers that are available)

Cheers though fellas, it's really great to get some experienced input :-)

The DVA rig goes down to 1 Sub/2 Tops per side. It would also play better together being an array, albeit a cheap one. Then again, it all depends on the room and acoustics etc, if the sound is bouncing off the walls then no system will really be any good tbh.

In reality, with the problems facing any install, the badge on the speaker is the least of your worries. The dB Tech stuff can be made to sound decent but you/they will need to give it some serious EQ. The better the stuff you buy, the more 'flat' it comes out of the box.

All depends on the room, the line array will be more like a flash light firing straight down the room....

depending on size I would still go with option 1 dispersion wise, remember where people stand they are not always going to be at the back of the room.... :)
