A piano, wooden floors and eventual move abroad

    Hi folks,

I just wanted to ask a couple of questions. I inherited my mother's piano which she loved so I really want to keep it with me . It's an upright Hayes London model and heavy as hell.

Thing is, we want to put down wooden floors or at least fake ones and we need to move the piano to do this. How do we do this? Is there some magic trolley available for pianos?
I also assume that a piano would not be healthy on a wooden floor. Would putting some inches of old carpet underneath the piano be enough to protect the new wooden floor form the weight of the piano?

Last question, we will be moving to Munich at some stage, hopefully soon. How in the heck do I get my mother's piano there!! Has anyone used good movers for such a distance with heavy but precious items?

If anyone can give some advice, I'd be grateful.

    Many thanks
    mica

I've moved my piano a few times to allow access for DIY work etc. It's still in tune despite the various moves. Move it carefully - no sudden shocks! You'll obviously need a strong helper.

As for the wooden floors, you could get a rug cut to suit the size of the piano. Mine sits on sanded & varnished floor boards and it has made four small indentations in the floorboards.

Most respectable movers would be well used to moving pianos. Most piano shops would have a list of recommended movers. Check out the Golden Pages for openers.

    Hi Crosstownk,

thanks for coming back to me. A rug is a good idea...we will be taking up old carpet so I could use a few sections of that to put under the piano. But in any case it hasn't done much harm in your house by moving it around. That's good to know.

How many people did it take to move your piano across the room? Is it an upright too?

Will do some research in the Golden Pages too... just nice if someone could recommend a company. But if not, the Golden Pages it is.

    cheers, mica

    Hi Micamaca,

I asked my brother who lives in Munich and he used Irish Shipping (http://www.irishshipping.com/) when moving his stuff over there. Apparently it was the cheapest they found. I hope this helps.

Cheers Dord, that was really very good of you to do that. I'll look them up :)
