I'd say that 99% of the time it doesn't come to anything.

In my opinion the reason's for it are
1: Like the Radiohead songs says, everyone plays guitar. So why would you need another on for your band since half of the band probably play it anyway.
2: Nearly all guitarists I've seen on here want to be in some sort of Zeppelin, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy type band where they can play c*ck rock solos. Who wants that unless they are a cover band? Again, if a band wants to do that they have a whole country full of guitarists to choose from who are into that kind of thing.

Personally as guitarist I've had very little luck on boards.ie looking for musicians. Partly because of the influences which I have not appealing to the majority of people on here and partly because I have quite high standards when it comes to looking for the right people. Also, did I mention, everyone seems to play guitar so why would they need me?

Theres alot of timewasters on here, i think they enjoy talking about playing music and the idea of being in a band but when it comes down to it theyre just indulging their own pipe dreams and dont actually do anything about it!! were trying to replace our singer at the moment, a good originals band plenty of gigs and only 4 replys out of over 100 views of the post, only 3 of which were relevent of which we've only managed to arrange a meeting with one. now if it works out with him i guess you could call boards a success but if it doesnt??????? perhaps it was a waste of my time and the other 100+ people who viewed the post.

my band have been trying to find a new guitarist and singer for about 4 months now and its an absolute nightmare, we've had a good few people who've come down for one jam, and then ****ed off forever without explanation, others don't even get that far, we'll arrange an audition and set a day and they cancel it the day before, sometimes they dont even tell us! we're there waiting for them in the rehearsal room, and when we ring them they tell us "its not gonna work out" or whatever, thats all well and good, but when our drummer hasta go out of his way to come down from dundalk just for an audition and is then told theres no jam, its ****in infuriating

There was a huge thread about this a while back.

Imo it's nion impossible to get all the elements of the band right.
    Take your typical 4 piece
    Covers or original or both
    What genre/bands - always a big one
Where people want to play ( i've played with some babies)
    Money
There's almost always someone who can't take a little constructive critisism and goes and sulks which means if they play/sing something wrong, it's impossibe to approach them
And probably most important - does everyone get on - four different pesonalities coming together with their own thoughts and ideas
I think it can be too hard to get everything just right, particulary when trying to set up a band from scratch

I'm generally wary of someone who can't find a guitarist/bassist/drummer within their social circles unless they're from the middle of nowhere, a singer I think is different however.

I've tried numerous times to find other musicians on Boards, I have a thread running at the moment looking for a drummer in Carlow. No replies yet : /

It may work for some, but it seems that the only way to find bandmates is getting a foot into the music scene, talking to the right people, and waiting for the stars to align. I suppose that's all part of the "magic"... but it's damn frustrating!

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've jammed with six different bands since I first discovered this forum. Okay the bands in question didn't really go anywhere long term but they were mostly brought to the stage where demos could have been recorded or gigs could have been played. My current band was put together through Boards as well.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think every view of your thread is going to be a person with any interest in the thread subject. You're going to get Google/Yahoo/MSN etc. web crawlers for example.

It can be difficult but it requires a bit of give and take and maturity on the part of all the band members. Rather than having to explicitly choose covers, no covers or both, simply choose both. The band doesn't have to play covers but at least be open to the possibility. My band is focused on original music but for any singer auditions that we do we try and rehearse a cover that the singer can do vocals for. That way they aren't trying to sing over something they're not familiar with.

I'm not sure exactly what the statistical breakdown is but I'm sure there's a large majority of posts and posters from the Dublin area so looking for band members outside Dublin is going to be difficult. It's actually something that can be quite frustrating when someone sounds like they could be a great match for your band but they neglect to write where they are located. It always seems to be people from Dublin that do this.
