Hey. My NCT ran out last week and i booked it yesterday but the first available date was November 26th? I booked it for then anyway.

I was just wondering if i get stopped by the Gardai will i get away with it if i show them the letter saying its been booked?

Legally you can get done for it.

Realistically they will probably give you a chance.

Yes no problems just carry around the letter to say that it is booked as long as your car is road worthy

Yes, unless you piss them off about something else.

This seems to be a very grey area and I wonder if there is a definitive position on this issue? Legally, you dont have a current, valid NCT pass, so therefore, legally, you shouldnt be driving. And if so, then are you just expected to wait until they are good and ready to inspect your car, or does a "letter" suffice?

The definitive legal position is, as you said, that you can't drive without a valid NCT. That said, the Gardai don't seem to be enforcing the law on this one ATM.

Well they allow you to book up to 3 months before it runs out (6 months for 1st NCT) so should the Gards wait till your good and ready to get it tested?

Keep an eye on the online bookings on the nct website, cancellations come up and you could get in within a week, best to check very late at night or early in the morn.
