Im buying an 80GB ps3 in game up the north, its 330euro all together with infamous and a choice between little big planet,killzone2 and few other games.

This a good deal? it's the best i can find so far.

As far as bundles go, inFamous and LBP or KZ2 is very good.

I don't know what prices are like back home so I can't say that is the best deal you'll get but it sounds good.

Dont Buy one , Dont do it .....

You will find yourself sitting in front of it for hours on end , your social life will suffer , you will then discover the on line gaming world (then ur finished) before long you will have a funny on line name like "billybigballs" or something , you will loose all sense of reality and mankind .
Your addiction will even make you think complete strangers (who you have never known or met before) are your best mates and they too will have funny names .
You will look forward to drinking beers and gaming and not going out , your other half (if applicable) will think you have turned into a complete geek and will never get her head around why you curse at a TV screen , she will also never understand why you now love your black beauty more than her and dont push her "buttons" anymore.

But all in all its great craic

So be warned dont do it ...LOL :D

I bought an 80gig PS3 in gamestop a few weeks ago with infamous and killzone for about 400 euro, so yes, thats a very good deal, get it :)

If you have a gf who isn't much of a gamer get LBP and a second controller. She'll play through it with you. Just show her the outfits and facial expressions she can change into in the levels.

If you're flying solo, get KZ2 and jump into the online.

Don't forget to get a HDMI cable if you have a HD screen as it doesn't come with one. Also, if it doesn't come with a dualshock then get one.

Smyths have a great bundle at the moment. For €439, I got the Killzone 2 bundle, 3 games from a list (I got Ratchet and Clank, Resistance 2 and Uncharted), a Logic3 wireless PS3 pad, and 2 €5 vouchers. I used one of the vouchers to get a €20 second hand copy of LBP for €15.

Good deal all round I thought....

I wouldn't say nonsense, but it makes sense that they will drop the price just before Christmas.

As for the PS3 Slim, I never really liked the idea but if it does happen, again, before Christmas is probably when we'll see it.

When is TGS [Tokyo Game Show] held? September? Could see them announced then.

That's a negative. However, hold out for a bit if you can. Maybe two months. There are rumuors flying everywhere that a price cut is on the cards and that the PS3 Slim is on the way.

Haven't heard about the PS3 Slim being BC though - not even in a rumour. Only thing I heard was a software solution and that would surely apply to all PS3s and not just the slim ones.

    noodler wrote: »

    :) I never said that :)

Although that would just be the [think of family friendly phrase] cream on the pie, if that happened.

EDIT : Re reading my post and yours, I can see the confusion. I was really saying to the op, to hang on before purchasing a PS3 as prices might be reducing in the very near future, and that the PS3 slim may be available to purchase.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Ah I see. It makes outstanding sense to bring it back via a software upgrad if possible. Even if it only lets you download PS2 games rather than let you play the discs.

I'm aware of such things and it's not a rumour, but it is just a software solution at the moment. Sony have not confirmed anything about sticking it into PS3's yet. But if it does happen, the idea is that all PS3's will get it via update, not just new slim models.

Software Solution ... what Software solution and what is the solution ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

The software solution is a rumour too and hasn't been confirmed by Sony. Everyone knows that the Emotion Engine is software based in every PS3 [except those with the Emotion Engine hardware].

The rumour is that the GFX chip has been implemented in software too, in the PS3 firmware. The rumour goes, that it's there but painfully slow. The slowness is the reason that Sony hasn't made it public yet.

Anyway, we are getting WAAAY OT. BC is not relevant to this topic.

They patented the right to software emulation recently I believe. Doesn't mean anything in itself of course.

GAME executives will be the last people to know of a price drop. Retailers are landed with RRP changes last minute. There isn't much hope of your friend at the bottom of the chain knowing before anyone else I'm afraid. A pricedrop in August doesn't even make incredible amounts of sense when they can wait until Christmas.

alri yeah well he is hardly just gonna come out and say ps3 are dropping prices next month like thats not general chit chat ya know .. wait and see .. cant just drop prices at christmas ya know ppl need do there shoppin months in advance

Do you really think Sony are allowing sensitive business information to drip down to the common retail employee? There'd be no need for secrecy if you're doing that. The fact that he works in a game store rings to me that actually talking price drops, console stuff and games probably is common chit-chat for the guy. Also, I've seen it a horrific number of times whereby a game-store employee will mouth of "facts" based on hearsay, knowing people will lap it up because they assume game store employee's have the inside track. They don't. The only information given to retailers (managers, executives, etc.) are release dates. If Sony drop their price by €100, they can announce it today and give a weeks notice to retailers to get ready.

Price drops are not common in summer because the games market drops off the face of the earth. The fact that we've had any major releases is unusual. This summer companies have tried to buck the trend of no sales by releasing games online rather then boxed through retail. Case in point; EA with Battlefield 1943. Or even Wipeout Pure expansion pack, etc. A few quid, boom, done. No major marketing put behind them etc. because the market won't pay enough dividends.

Yes, people are buying Christmas crap in summer to spread the costs. This is probably less then 1% of all Christmas shoppers. Trying to hit that market is insane, especially in this economy. If you lower your console price now you end up with the competition potentially lowering their prices at Christmas, leaving you exposed without a publicised pricedrop. If it were true that Christmas shopping was spread as far back as August to December, then you'd see less games getting releases in the last week of November/first week of December and a more evenly spread release schedule. Unfortunately Christmas time is still the most lucrative time to release stuff.

I can still see a price drop BEFORE slim comes out. May be necessary to get rid of the existing SKUs.

    +1.

I bought mine in December even though a price drop was expected for last March and it never happened.

Just look for a good deal.

I didn't see anybody TELLING him. I'm my case, I suggested that if he could wait, then do so. More for the Slim than anything else. If THAT'S going to happen, it's going to be announced at GamesCom next month. Not a huge amount of time to wait, rather than buying the bulky PS3 Fat.

I'm not going to indulge you too much. MANY people buy console for MANY reasons. End off.

Now, on my part, when I purchased my PS3, it was PURELY as a media center. I had NO intention of playing games. That outlook has since changed but is irrelevant.

The fact that YOU cannot think of any reason why someone would not want to wait for the slim variant is irrelevant. And to say that the Slim is "the same" as the original, is disingenuous and naive.

    1. Smaller so will fit into smaller spaces [some people don't like a lot of bulky boxes around their TV]
    2. Possibly cheaper
    3. WILL consume less electricity
    4. Who knows what other hardware changes there may be [good or bad]. If you think this is not a factor just remember the US and Euro 60GB versions compared to PSP FAT/Slim to the PSP Go [extra Bluetooth, no UMD etc]

Personally, if I didn't have a PS3 and found out a Slim was in the works, I'd wait a few months for one.

I was giving possible advice not TELLING him to do anything.

    That's incredibly naive...

"PS3 delivers the next generation of interactive entertainment. Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies, cutting edge High Definition games, easy music, video and photo storage, free access to PlayStation®Network and much more." (from http://ie.playstation.com/ps3/)

That's how Sony sees it's console... Why can't consumers do the same? Hell, the first thing the site mentions is the Blu-ray capability!

    Wow this is going off-topic!

OP - Have you decided on what you are getting?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

    Why i bought a PS3 ...

    1.) Bluray

2.)Media Centre ..streaming vid etc etc

3.)Web browsing capabilities from sitting room TV .

    4.)Believe it or not...........GAMING .

Now that list has changed considerably since i opened up "Pandora's On-Line gaming" Box." and got hooked , so the one thing that my black beauty gets turned on for is a good game of on-line RSV2 (wish the other half could feel the same )

Now as for having a slim PS3 ...well the grass is always greener and having a slimer black beauty is always a good thing .:P

    My 2 pence worth .

Last time I'll go OT on this but I soooooooooo feel your pain. I'd love to settle down and have a few games with the other half. She;s just not interested in games at all. She will play 30 minutes of Buzz on line, once every two or three months, but after that, it's back to Corrie :(

    Again, thats not true.

The 60GB American version had hardware emulation while our 60GB version had software emulation. The 60GBs were the only SKUs with BC for PS2 games. All SKUs have PS1 emulation.

240 for a 60GB model? What? That was a steal! Understandably it is a older console but it is still fairly rare.
