So is it possible to apply for an english passport if I was born there? It would be handy to have both an english and irish passport for my rtw trip for differing visa requirements for Irish and English citizens.

Some countries allow UK citizens in without a visa and charge the Irish, and other countries allow the Irish in for free and charge the english!

No such thing as an English passport, but you might qualify for a UK passport.

    Details here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Passports/index.htm

Make sure you get the exact photos taken, as they are very strict - as I found out earlier this year!

Yes, I could even get one since my dad was born there.
Not sure if you would have to claim citizenship first or not, perhaps not considering our open relationship with the UK.

If you're going anywhere which might be considered "strange" - i.e. countries where looking the wrong way at a border guard will get you arrested and strip-searched, it might be worth your while seeing what other travellers have done in similar circumstances.

That is, what would happen if they found two passports on you, regardless of the fact that they're both legit? The US, for example, are well known for confiscating one passport and sending it to the local embassy (who hand it back to you when you get home :D)

British citizenship is not automatically granted on being born there. Citizenship comes from the mother initially if the parents were unmarried at the time of birth, or from either one of the parents if they are married.
