Oh I can see a can of worms being opened, but on a basic level, ITF is a traditional martial art, WTF is an olympic sport.

All the techniques are taekwon-do techniques.

BOTH ITF and WTF are traditional Martial Arts,
They both do sport Taekwondo (Competition)
WTF then moved away with Kicking only in competition and no punching to the face, then WTF became an Olympic sport, ( because of this) it is easy to say that WTF is only sport and not Martial Art.

Today most people can not tell the difference until they see the Poomsae/Forms/Patterns.

    uhm ok...
but this doesnt answer my question.
ok so i know ITF is traditional martial art and WTF is olympic sport.
but how do i know which 1 im doing

Tbh I wouldn't classify you as doing any martial art if you're not being taught by an instructor. Certainly not TKD anyway.

simply not being taught by an instructor doesnt mean the martial art I do isnt taekwondo.
Sure theres nothing like a real life mentor, but i didnt want to find a club.

I do tkd and im proud to admit im not being instructed by a professional.

    this is what i do

I watch tutorials on something like youtube.
i try and try till i think i get it right,
i record it on video camera and compare it to the guy/girl in the tutorial.
after breaking my ankle in april i was out for a month and a week, and i couldnt do 540 kicks anymore.
but im getting them like before now.

sure its not the cleanest thing, but i love doing it and i get a good feeling while doing it.

dont tell me i dont do tkd, because even if it isnt ill keep doing whatever this self taught kicking is,because i love it!

If all you're doing is learning fancy kicks then you're certainly not learning Taekwon-do. However the style you probably think you're learning would be WTF as it's mainly focused on kicking.

You're certainly not doing ITF because as someone who is a student of ITF - It's taught a certain way to prevent people like you from ever ruining the martial art.

There's never, ever been a 540 turning kick done during my time in the dojang, because it's just really a show-off move. It's not effective and you certainly wouldn't get away with doing it in sparring.

Taekwon-do is more than just kicks and punches - there are things that you cannot learn outside of the Dojang and can not learn without an instructor. What you're doing isn't any form of Taekwon-do. If anything what you are doing is something along the lines of Tricking, where you concentrate on learning fancy techniques to show off. Please do not ever say to others that you practice Taekwon-do though, you have no right to do so. You do not do Taekwon-do.

yep i know 540 isnt very effective.
a tornado kick or jump reverse hook kick would cause more dmg,
well 540 kick a tkd move and it is very hard to learn, sure its just for show.
but who says it cant hit?
sure a direct punch to the face would be more effective than any kick
    but it can still hit.
i learned WTF as you said, and its still a martial art.
i can learn anything you tell me without me having an instructor.
you think people cant learn a martial art without an instructor?
tell me though, what moves or punches or kicks cant I learn without an instructor?

    im curious to know

You seem to lack basic understanding of the martial art first of all.

You did not learn WTF, you did not learn any form of Taekwon-do. You have learned some techniques which are used in Taekwon-do. You do not know any style of Taekwon-do.

I'm not going to waste my energy trying to educate someone who has as little sense as you do.

I admire your enthusiasm to learn but please understand there is so much you'll miss out on and get wrong, potentially harming yourself if you don't include an instructor. have you looked into the sine wave principals or center of gravity issues? these were things i know i wouldn't have been able to grasp from videos on youtube

Crazi_Monkey, perhaps if you show is a video, we might be able to tell you whether you are immitating ITF or WTF.

But as challengemaster pointed out, you aren't learning anything other than tricks. There is so much more than fancy kicks to taekwon-do. I suggest you go to one of those TKD schools I posted in another of your threads. Try out proper instruction and see if it is for you. And I don't know or train with any professional TKD instructor.

You must have some ego if you think you can teach yourself TKD or any art without help.-I'm not a fan but its very skillful and you need an expert to correct you and to make sure your doing things right-your not doing TKD and just learning to throw your legs about.

    My troll senses are tingling.

In another thread the OP claimed to teach himself Muay Thai. When I made reference to that, this thread was started, and now he's teaching himself Taekwon-Do.

    Opinions?

In this thread the OP claims to be 14 so perhaps just an enthusiastic but misguided teen who needs to be steered in the right direction.

I hope so because otherwise (going on the thread I linked to) its some perv

I don't think he's a troll, but his posts are potentially confusing to people - he was giving advise to someone (looking to start a MA) in another thread about MAs and what to do etc. You almost want to put flashing lights into his replies to posters saying to take his "advise" with a pinch of salt, cos he doesn't actually practise MA even though he thinks he does...considering all the great real advise you can get on this forum, it makes a mockery a bit when you have someone giving advise they are not qualified to give.

Along with this whole teaching himself MT and TKD. I still don't think he's a troll though, just a young enthusiastic lad - maybe just a friendly reminder as to how this forum should work...

Think something like capeoira might actually suit him very well btw...

Also, Jon - check your PMs ya lazy git!!!

    I think you're probably right Simon, and I will, I will! I know, I know!!:D

    Hi,
Maybe let us know your location and we could recommend various clubs in your area. You could try out a few and see what you think. You may really enjoy it...
