BCI update on DTT

I wasn't going to post this, but I guess it is in the public interest!

I sent a pretty pointed email enquiring if they would agree with me that pay DTT would not work here, given the current economic state and determining factors in larger markets...

The response is edited to deal with issues surrounding the contract and timescales.

    FROM BCI:

As you are aware the BCI is currently engaged in contract negotiations with One Vision for the commercial multiplex contracts for Digital Terrestrial Television in Ireland. The negotiations have been focused to date on a number of areas: the details of the contract with the BCI; developments in relation to contract negotiations with RTÉ Networks Limited for transmission and; a project plan for the establishment and launch of commercial DTT in Ireland. The negotiations are progressing well and we hope to announce further details regarding the proposed launch of commercial DTT in the coming weeks.

In response to the proposal to have a totally free DTT platform, there are two issues here. Firstly the legislation provides that all free-to-air services licensed in the State will continue to have the capacity be received on a free-to-air basis. For this reason one multiplex was gifted to RTÉ to enable this happen. From a commercial multiplex perspective the proposal received from One Vision envisages a fee-paying element. It is worth noting that the basic package proposed by this consortium is €9.99. For details of what this basic package offers, please follow this link: http://www.bci.ie/DTT/one_vision/app1.pdf You will get the specifics on page 60 of the application.
