Coiste Contae Ard Mhacha wish to announce that it has regrettably accepted the resignation of Peter McDonnell as Armagh Senior Football Manager.

Cathaoirleach Kevin Brady would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank Peter on behalf of the entire County and pay tribute to him for his unquestionable commitment, passion for the county, and dedication to a very demanding post over the last two years. The support and application of his backroom team have also been second to none and have demonstrated the strong volunteer ethos in Armagh GAA.

He added that Peter had shown tremendous conviction in accepting the role, given the challenge of the team’s success in recent years, and the fact that a number of high profile and extremely talented players had also left the inter-county scene. This was a test that he met head-on, and a number of new faces from his highly successful Under-21 squad and from the county club scene were integrated comfortably to the panel.

Kevin said that the winning of an Ulster Provincial Championship in his first year could not be underestimated, and that Peter himself had been disappointed in not being able to build on this and reach the closing stages of the All-Ireland series.

Peter himself is firmly of the opinion that despite the continuing transition period following the retirements of key players in recent months, the current senior panel is more than capable of competing for major honours, keeping the county among the highest echelon of teams, and considers that the county is fortunate to have such a talented and committed panel of players available.

However, he feels after considerable deliberation that even at this stage of development he should step aside, and that the time is right for change at the helm of Armagh senior football.

Wouldn't think so.McGeeney (tough anagram ;) ) will more than likely stick with Kildare seen as they have made a lot of progress in the last two years and McGeeney will want to push the team on instead of abandoning Kildare.Personally,if McGeeney jumped ship to Armagh,he'd be jumping from a team with good prospects to a sinking ship.

Joe Kernan is tipped to come back too but I'd imagine he is happy in his pundit spot on TV3.Somebody from the current Crossmaglen managerial setup seems logical.

weather or not kildare have made progress is still very debatable we will know over the next few weeks but getting to a leinster final is not anything special where are the last four teams who got to a leinster final im sure they thought they were making progress to

Good question.Offaly were a one season wonder if you call them that as they never did anything after 2006 Leinster Final.Laois were in good form from the early to mid noughties and have gone well back at this stage.Wexford were a team with a lot of promise. They couldn't get that Leinster Semi monkey off their back and when they did, they flopped in the Leinster Final and recovered well to reach an All Ireland semi final taking Down and Armagh on the way before pushing Tyrone and losing.

Kildare have gone from losing to the likes of Laois (12 points) and Wicklow (4 points) and Louth to beating Laois out the gate and Wexford. They pushed Dublin in the Leinster Final and also ran Cork close last year after a dreadful start.Kildare have potential,I don't think Armagh will be back for another few years. They are rebuilding at this stage after the loss of McDonnell,Bellew and Clarke.McGeeney would seem less likely to abandon a work in progress team that is on a decent run.Plus he plays for Na Fianna and is based in Dublin.Kildare is much handier for him.;)
